Senator Bristow of Kansas was tho principal Hpcakor in mipport of Colonel HoohovoH, and Senator John Sharp Williams of Mississippi was tho former president's principal assailant. Mr. Williams character ized tho former president as "a modern Caesar, willing to seize power by any moans," while Bristow dofondod the colonel as tho modern tribune of the people, and warmly criticised President Taft's adminis tration. Tho debate becamo almost ultra Bcnsational when Senator Williams road to tho senate a parody of tho Apostles Creed as follows: "I bellovo In Theodoro Roosevelt, maker of noise and strife, and In ambition, his only creed (my Lord.) "I believe in the holy Outlook, tho big stick, tho Ananias, the for giveness of political activities, the resurrection of presidential ambi tions and tho third term everlasting ly Amen! Amen! Amen!" Tho debate was precipitated by Senator Bristow's return to his charge that collusion had existed between the senate and the depart ment of justice in the sending of otllcial correspondence, and that par tiality had been shown in the pro ceedings in that only correspondence regarding the course of President Roosevelt's administration had been sent to the senate while tho papers relating to the Taft administration proceedings had not. He asserted again that Attorney General Wicker sham had his reply ready to send when Senator Johnston's resolution reached him, and referred to the fact that two similar resolutions by Senators Overman and Lea had not boon complied with. Senator Johnston denied there had been an understanding, and declared ho had seen neither tho attorney general nor the president for a month. Senator Clark of Wyoming pointed out that the Johnston resolution differed from the others in that it called for certain specific informa tion. He and Senator Nelson gave instances in which Colonel Roose velt, when president, had withheld correspondence with the bureau of corporations. "If. the senator can show me that the present president has traveled in tho same way as tho former presi dent, I will condemn him as strongly as I would Roosevelt," he declared. "It would have to be a matter of grave public concern, in which vital interests of the country were af fected," returned Senator Bristow, "before I would dig up the confiden tial correspondence of my predeces sor's secretary and cabinet officers in regard to matters to which he has a perfect right to believe would be kept in tho confidence of the depart ment and print them for political campaign purposes." With that ' Senator "Williams stepped out from his desk and took a position in the center aisle of the senate where he said he ."could be more impartial as between parties and factions," and entered into a good-natured lecture to the republi cans. Senator Bristow he referred to as one of the chief uplifters of tho present time, who was still opposed to lifting the lid from administration secrets. Mr. Bristow insisted that he had been misunderstood. Senator Williams discussed the correspondence made public recent ly and then touched on "the third term." "Are you going to come out for a third term?" he demanded. "Are you going to forget what Washing ton, Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln and McKinley did and said? Are you go ing to put all that behind you be cause of a little keynote phasing?" Senator Nelson interjected that his sympathies would be with the democrats if Colonel Roosevelt should be elected. "You will get the worst of it," he said. "Not the democratic party only, but the entire American people will get the worst of it," retorted Wil liams. Ho declared that if Ameri cans were not careful they might sink into Caesarism. He referred to the former president as "saint Theodore,' and said that when Mr. Roosevelt had snoken of ennri tmctc and bad trusts he had meant to imply that the trust supporting the admin istration must be dwealt with, len iently, while those who fought it must be treated severely. "Perkins had said ho would fight the administration and he said it out loud," said Senator Williams. "He was not wining to play in the presi dent's back yard, if tho nrMirianf wouldn't play right." Mr. Bristow closed the debate with a defense of Mr. Roosevelt. "I have no brief to speak for Mr Roosevelt," he said, "but I want to say that he will be remembered as a great political leader, who will be remembered for his marvelous achievement in tho interests of the American people long after his tra- uucers are forgotten.
