A Mexico City dispatch to the
Courier-Journal said: "The Mexi
can minister of finance, who is said
to have borne the ultimatum of the
revolutionists, reached Mexico City,
and immediately went into a con
ference with President Diaz. Later
he issued a plea to all Mexicans to
rally to the support of the administra
tion to check the revolt. He dis
claimed intention of assuming the
presidency pending another national
election.
Booker T. Washington, the negro
educator, was attacked and severely
injured in New York city, by H. A.
Ulrich. Ulrich claims that Washing
ton was annoying Ulrich's wife and
bad followed her to her apartments.
Washington's friends say that it is a
case of mistaken Identity and that
Washington was taken for another
man. President Taft, Andrew Car
egine and others have expressed their
confidence in Washington.
A Springfield, 111., dispatch, carried
by the Associated Press says:
"Despite threats and predictions he
would be interfered with by Lorimer
partisans in the Illinois legislature,
Robert X. Owen, United tates senator
from Oklahoma, delivered a forceful
exposition of the initiative and
referendum at a public meeting of
the house judiciary committee. Sena
tor Owen was not interrupted. He
suffered no open discourtesy, al
though several Lorlmerites on the
committee did not attend the meet
ing. The speakers, besides Senator
Owen, were: Judge F. Dunne of
Chicago, Robert Baton of the Illinois
state grange, and John C. Richberg,
representing the Civic Federation of
Chicago. The, first three spoke in
favor of th& initiative and referen
dum, while 'Mr. Richberg spoke in
opposition. Lee O'Neil Browne and
his followers on the minority side
and a number of members on tho
republican side had declared they
would not countenanco the appear
ance of Senator Owen In tho hall of
representatives, which thoy consider
a personal affront. Various members
of this faction of Lorimer followers
hold numerous heated unofficial
gatherings. Minority Leader Alschu
ler said he felt that to avoid trouble,
Senator Owen should speak in some
other place than in tho hall of representatives."
A Carson, Nov., dispatch, carried
by tho Associated Press, says:
"Governor Oddie signed what is
known as the 'time lock' divorce law,
defining . six months' continuous
physical presence of the plaintiff in
the county as tho solo requisite on
which to base jurisdiction in divorce
proceedings. Formerly divergent
views on residence, based on intent,
have made confusion among judges
of tho various districts." '
William J. Cummins, directing
head of the Carnegie Trust Company
in New York, was indicted, charged
with the theft of $335,000 from the
institution over a year ago. His ar
rest follows the revelations incident
to tho Robin conviction.
The federal court at Chicago,
Judge George A. Carpenter presiding,
has ruled that the indictments
against tho ten Chicago meat packers
for violating the anti-trust law are
good. The Chicago Recold-Herald
says: "Judge Carpenter reviewed
tho Immunity act of 1903, which pro
vides that no person shall bo excused
from attending and testifying or
from producing books and papors,
contracts and agreements on tho
