"Uncle Joe" is lucky. An Asso ciated Press dispatch says: "Care ful analysis of the conference report on the legislative appropriation bill shows that Speaker Cannon's auto mobile will be cared for at govern ment expense after all. Prom the report presented to tho two branches 01 congress it appeared that the amendment providing for the main tenance of the president's car had been retained and the amendment relating to the speaker's car had been rejected. Technically that is what happened, but as a matter of fact the $2,500 appropriation for the speaker's car was transferred to an other paragraph covering expenses of select committees and similar items and was incorporated into a lump appropriation of $75,000. So It ap pears that there is to be no discrimin ation between the speaker and the vice president after all." As a sort of rebuke to the Indiana republicans, President Taft an nounced that ho would not visit In dianapolis on his western tour. Later on tho advice of friends he reconsid ered and it is said he will speak in Indianapolis May 5 at which, time he will reply to his critics. Press dispatch says: "The democrats of tho house today gave a noisy greeting to Eugene Foss, democrat, of Massachusetts, who was escorted to tho speaker's desk by his brother, George B. Fobs, of Illinois, republi can, to take tho oath of office. It Is tho first time in the history of con gress that brothers of opposite po litical faith have been members at tho same time. Tho mother and wives of the two men were in the gallery." A Washington dispatch to the' Chi cago Record-Herald says: "The first presidential jaunt into the west will begin on April 30, and Mr. Taft will go to Buffalo before starting for the Ohio valley. From Buffalo he will travel to Pittsburg, where he will spend two days. He will then Jump to Cincinnati, Indianapolis and St. Louis, making speeches at every stop. He will then either go directly to New York or return to Washington and start for Now York two days later." The Scott bill to prohibit transac tions in cotton has been reported favorably by the committee on agriculture. The senate committee headed by Senator Lodge has reported that cold storage plants are responsible for high prices. Representative Foelker of New York introduced a bill to put meat on the free list, but ho is having trouble in gotting Mr. Payne's com mittee to consider it. John A. Penton, editor of the American Flag," of Cleveland, Ohio, was indicted by a District of Colum bia grand jury on tho charge of libel on Representative Steenerson of Min nesota. Steenerson is opposed to the ship subsidy bill and the American Flag made an attack upon him.
