A Great Campaign Tho recent elections in Great Brit ain were the source of lots of fun. "Where will wo get the money to pay these increased old ago pen sions?" queried the Duke of Marl borough in a sp'eech. "From such as thee, lad!" shouted a workingman in the audience. An imperialist had a big map of Great Britain and her possessions with all the possessions printed in red. "Ah, Britons," exclaimed tho im perialistic speaker, "what do those red spots mean?" "Blood!" shouted an out-of-work mechanic from the rear of tho hall. "What will result from tho adop tion of such an iniquitous re-valuation tax as this one here proposed?" queried one of the opponents of the Lloyd-George budget. "More farms and fewer game pre serves!" exclaimed a dispossessed farmer. Tariff refdrm as preached in Great Britain does not mean a lower tariff, but it means an abandonment of free trade. "Workingmen of Britain," said an advocate of that kind of tariff re form, "you deserve protection." "Yes, like we had when we had the corn laws and the bread tax," shout ed an old workingman who could re member back a couple of generations. The average "Britisher" may dear ly love a lord, but he doesn't hesitate to tell the aforesaid lord to keep his place. The barons-of -England made King John come to time. Some of these 'days the workingmen of the United States will make the tariff barons come to time. Another Credit Mark On divers and sundry occasions the Architect of this department has re ferred to the fact that he is a union printer, and that he dearly loves to keep in touch with the craftsmen. He has also declared on several occasions that he is proud of the organization of which he is a member, and now he desires to call attention to the fact that another reason for pride has been added to the long list. On February 17, last, the Amos J. Cummings Memorial Library addi tion to the Union Printers' Home at Colorado Springs was formally dedi cated. The building cost $30,000 every penny donated by members of the International Typographical Union. This building will house a library of 15,000 volumes the best selected library of its size, and the most valuable, in the United States. This library contains autographed de luxe editions of the greatest living authors, and of many dead ones. Twain, Field, Bancroft, Ridpath, Longfellow, - Doyle, Gladstone and scores of others whose names are household words, have contributed to tho library at the Home. In the building, in addition to the library, are the dining rooms and the new kitchen of the home. The late Amos J. Cummings, for years a mem ber of congress and always a staunch union printer, donated his private library to the Home, and the build ing is erected in nis memory. Today the International Typographical Union's property at Colorado Springs is worth a round million dollars, and the Printers' Home is. the greatest monument to fraternity and brother hood and love that has ever been erected by workingmen. The old time printers who are rounding out their liyes so restfully and so com fortable at the Home, can sit upori tho front porches and watch the never ending clouds and colors upon tho summit of Pike's Peak, and feel that scattered all over tho North American continent are brothers who will always bear them in loving re membrance. And may tho grand old organization last as long as that peak itself, and may it continue to bo as truo an exemplar of that charity wo know as lovo as it has been in tho fifty-eight years of its past history. You better believe tho Architect is proud of his membership in an or ganization like tho I. T. U. Another Complaint "Was your season's tour profit able?" "It was tho worst we ever had," groaned Hamlet DePhat, the famous tragedian. "Why, I thought these prosperous times would reflect upon your pro fession." "Quite the contrary," said tho ac tor. "Prices of produce are so pro hibitive that we seldom got more than two eggs and a half-dozen pota toes in an evening." Squelched We were trying to convince our visitor that we had many up-to-dato improvements in our city. "Why, we have pay-as-you-enter street cars in this city," wo ex claimed. "That's all very well," said our visitor, "but wo have come-when-you-want-'em cars in our town." This made us feel small until wo happened to think, that the chances were that the visitor was stringing us. Limerick There was an old fellow named Pfeiff Who grew tired and weary of Plieff; One morning lie said My life is a thread I'd cut if I but had a kneiff. Brain Leaks There are men who can boss every body but themselves. The wife of tho corner grocer could tell a lot of things if she would. People who want to be miserable do not have to hunt far for a reason. A great many people say of a ser mon, "That's good," and then go right home and forget it. Paying your dues in your fraternal lodge merely to keep up your life in surance does not spell fraternity by any means. When a man is out of work and broke a lot of people wonder why he don't rush out into the country and tako a homestead. Every time wo see a bargain coun ter rush it is easier for us to under stand why the shirtwaist makers get such miserable wages. Some husbands and fathers would be better off if, after taking the in itiative they would refer the matter to the wives and mothers. President Taft says tho Aldrich Cannon tariff law is the best ever, and to date we haven't heard it dis puted by a single trust magnate. What millions need is more soup and less sociology, more meat and less meddling, more sunshine scat terers and fewer slumming societies. The other day we saw a man smok ing, "long green" tobacco in a cob pipe with an alder stem, and it made us no homesick for OF Missouri that we didn't know what to do.
