Thoso who havo road our preceding announcements in The Commoner know that at San Bonito wo have an ideal climate, fertile soil and water for irrigation by gravity from the Rio Grande. Wo havo already callod your attention especially to BUgar cane, cotton, onions and cabbage. Tho products of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, In which San Benito is located, are so numerous and so varied that It Is difficult to decide which to choose as tho subject of this announcement. We might speak of broom corn with its yield of two heavy crops from one planting, of Sorghum, which is cut four and flvo times a year, yielding from four to flvo tons at each cutting por acre, of Indian Corn with its two crops a year on tho same ground and its steady local market at from seventy flvo cents to one dollar per bushel. We would also like to tell you about strawberries, which for tho past two months have been so much onjoyod by tho people of San Bonito. But so many pooplo have written us regarding ALFALFA that "wo thought best to devote this page to that product. We do not want you, however, to forget the splendid onions and cabbago now being harvested at San Benito. Of course you are Inter ested in knowing how Burress Brothers are coming out with their onions and whether Mr. Powell is really going to clear over $4,000 on his ton acres of cabbago as Indicated in his letter which you saw in The Commoner a few weeks ago. The Cabbage and Onions are being shipped right along now and prices are advancing. Only yesterday a car load of cabbage was shipped from San Benito at $45 per ton. We will publish a statement from these men as soon as they havo sold all their crop. ALFALFA does not do well In all sections of the country. It la a product requiring special conditions of soil, climate and water. At San Benito tho soil is deep, rich and mellow; the climate is semi arid ond alfalfa grows twelve months in the year. Since it is necessary to irrigate it is an easy matter to give the alfalfa water just when it needs it and the oxact amount to secure tho best results. -JJJIIE-CfREAT SAN BENITO GRAVITY CANAL Water Flows nil tho Way From th6 River Into tho Main Canal and Laterals and Out Upon tho Fields by Gravity and Without the Use of Pumps. CORRECTION In announcement No. 2, appearing in The Com moner o March 2G, describing the great Gravity Canal System of tho San Benito Land and Water Co., in the fifth line from the top of tho noxt to tho last column, tho printer inadvertently substi tuted the word "not" for "and," changing tho entire meaning Tho last part of sentence corrected should read: " the water flowing naturally all tho way by gravity, and without the use of pumps." Readers will kindly note this correction. We wish to emphasize tho fact that the San Benito Canal is a GRAVITY CANAL, a feature which distinguishes it from all other canals in the lower Rio Grande Valley, and gives it a great advantage over them. b Alfalfa ox Farm of H. G. SUUvrcll, San Benito, Texas. In any region where ALFALFA grows successfully there you will find the farmers prosperous. For not only is there always a strong de mand for this product at good prices but the raising of alfalfa enriches rather than injures the land on which It grows. However, we believe that you would be more interested in knowing what has actually been done in the growing of alfalfa at San Benito than you would be in any general statement as to the mere possibili ties of this product in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. We therefore ask you to read tho following letter from H. G. I am very busy now picking and marketing my straw berries and harvesting my alfalfa but as you say that you want this statement to go in Bryan's Commoner, I gladly take the time to write Y?U' J .c;eared my land during December, 1907.
