HOW GRANT BECAME A SMOKER
Major General Fred D. Grant, who
is presiding at the court-martial now
in session at Fort Wayne, in the
western suburbs of this city, said to
some friends here that the cigar that
initiated his father, the late Presi
dent U. S." Grant, into the tobacco.
smoking habit really figured quite
strongly in the winning of the battle
of Fort Don.elson. Speaking of this
incident, General Grant said:
"My father was in conference with
Admiral Foote on the latter's flag
ship and had just accepted a cigar
from the admiral when word came
to him that "the left flank of his
forces was belnir renulsed.
"Hurrying ashore and galloping on
a fleet horse to the ""battlefield, he
succeeded in rallying his forces so
completely that chaos was turned in
to victory. General Buckher had to
comply with .my father's' demand for
an unconditional surrender.
"The newspapers tbdk up the fact
that father had rushed from the war
ship to the battlefield without taking
Admiral Foote's cigar from his
mouth. Tha dispatches from the
front told how father had come onto
the battlefield 'cool and collected and
peacefully smoking ' a long black
cigar.' ,
"People who read the story began
sending congratulations and presents
of cigars. Tens of thousands of
cigars came, and my father smoked
many of them. It made a confirmed
smoker of him.
"But he did not smoke as many
cigars as people imagined he did.
Jjometimes one cigar that he would
frequently re-light would last him
from breakfast to luncheon. It was
the fact that he almost constantly
held a cigar between his fingers that
made people describe him as a great
smoker."
General Grant said that his father
tried to acquire the smoking habit
at West Point just because the rules
forbade smoking. His attempts at
smoking while he was a cadet, how
ever, made him very sick, and when
he left West Point he practically
gave them up. During the Mexican
war, General Grant said, his father
took a liking to Mexican cigars and
found that they agreed with him, but
when he returned to the north he
again dropped the habit of smoking,
to resume it after the Fort Donel

IN THE SPIRIT OF SERVICE
Mr. Bryan needs no sympathy in
any personal sense. A mass of de
luded voters who purchased with,
their votes a prosperity they are not
to get these need sympathy. But
Mr. Bryan is a greater man than the
presidency could have made him, He
might have elevated the presidency;
the presidency could not have elevat
ed him. He might have made his
administration a historical turning
point from plutocracy, but the of
fice could not have made of him a
greater historical figure than he is
as a private citizen. Among the
other great men who were defeated
for the presidency by lesser men, Mr.
Bryan will loom taller and fairer
even among the Clays and Wobsters

imperial crowns, but Bryan sought it
in the spirit of democratic service.

found a $5 bill which he lost at the
time of Cleveland'.s election in 1892.
It was in a pair of trousers which his
wife stored in the attic. Mr. Mopps
is sure that he would never have re
covered the money if Bryan had been
elected.
Kittanning, Pa., Nov. 19. Henry
Hoffmeister, Kittanning's leading
tin-smith, yesterday hired Johnny
Burchard, agreeing to pay him $11 a
month while he was learning to be
a tinner. Mr. Hoffmeister, in an in
terview last night, declared that he
would not have possessed enough
confidence to hire the boy If Bryan
had pulled through.
Napoleon, O., Nov. 19. A. Eemple,
who travels for a Cleveland hard
ware firm, arrived hero on the day
preceding the election with only $6
in his pocket. After the ballots had
