Chicago Record-Herald saysi "The
lid was clamped down, apparently,
upon trouble and friction within the

west, incidentally, and Adlai B. Ste

Btrong upward bound. Everybody
seemed to be 'satisfied with what hap

crowd of 25,000 persons in the city
to witness" the visit of the presiden

University of Illinois were nominat

a platform Jjwas adopted which was

the honors of the day with Mr,

was apparently fit for the task which
confronts him. He had the fire in
his eye when he addressed the con

Congressman George L. Liilley was

Mr. Bryan reached Wheeling, W. Va.,
and was accorded a rousing welcome.
The evening meeting in Wheeling
was marked by splendid enthusiasm1.
Vice Chairman P. I. Hall, who Is
in charge at democratic headquar
ters, was asked for an expression re
garding the statement attributed to
former President Grover Cleveland
with reference to the presidential
election. Ho said:
"I have talked with more than
twenty-five democrats of all tactions
about the published paper, no one of
whom expressed the slightest resent
ment and all of whom expressed re
gret regarding it. If Mr. Cleveland
were now living and could see tho
efforts now being made by democrats
once more to unite the democratic
party, he would be among the first
and foremost to counsel and advise
In the burying of all differences. It
Is regretted even by those who were
most bitterly opposed to the late
president that this riiatter should be
made public after his death. It I
regarded by them as a political trick
and they believe that the Atherlcan'
people Will resent the indelicacy of
the publication at this 'time. No
body can answer a posthumus state
riient. So far as political effect' is
concerned it will do the democratic
party no harm. The motive of those
publishing such a statement now is
