iyfg?WSfflii " T"VS , r JANUARY 3, 1908 The Commoner. 15 MR. BRYAN AND NOMINATION Washington Post W. Bourko Cockran, representative of the Twelfth New York district in the house of representatives, orator and Tammany sachem, said at the New Willard last night that William J. Bryan's announcement of his will ingness to be his party's candidate for the presidency did not surprise him in the least. "I have always thought," said Mr. Cockran, "that Mr. Bryan is the moBt honest man in the democratic party. This state ment by him only goes to prove it. A more astute and designing poli tician would have waited until just before the convention to .announce the fact that he was in the race for the presidency. But not so with Mr. Bryan. He is so honest that he blurts it right out without waiting." "How about Mr. Bryan's suggestion as to the platform?" "That, too, shows that Mr. Bryan is the most honest democrat of this day. Other wise ho would have waited for the convention to meet before making the platform." "Have you thought of any other candidate?" "I have thought of little else during the past few months." Buffalo, N. Y. Times (edited by Norman B. Mack.) The Brooklyn Eagle, which has always opposed Mr. Bryan, in an editorial -suggests that Mr. Mack, democratic national com mitteeman from New York; Mr. Murphy, leader of Tammany hall, and Mr. Conners, chairman of the New York state democratic commit tee, get together and formulate a program for the democratic party next year which will eliminate Mr. Bryan from the candidacy for presi dent. The Eagle does not give any reason why this should be done. It appears to Mr. Mack that Mr. Bryan is ttie choice of the rank and file of the democratic party, that he is vir tually nominated now, and that any attempt of any man or set of men to formulate a program eliminating Mr. Bryan would be upset by the people. If the Eagle could prove to the people that someone else would make a stronger run than Mr. Bryan they would undoubtedly give its choice consideration, but as he is manifestly the strongest man in sight there Is every reason that they should stand for him. Speaking for himself, Mr. Mack is glad to go along with the people. The others men tioned by the Eagle will probably speak for themselves. The expressed willingness of Mr. Bryan to accept the presidential nomination if his party desires, him to make the run means that it will have a splendid chance of winning, and it Is now the duty of all good democrats to get together and take advantage of the splendid opportunity. Birmingham, Ala., Age-Herald At a time when republicanism has brought serious trouble to the land it is a mistake to say that Mr. Bry an's supporters will be confined to the democratic party. He will draw supporters from all ranks from all who feel the pressure of the times, and who are acute enough to trace their troubles back to the party that has held undisputed control of every branch of the government ten years. If he is defeated under such circum stances the story of financial mix ups will have to be revised, but no one anticipates the need of any such Cure hoarseness and sore throat caased by cold or use Of the VOlce. Addrcaa SEARS, ROEBUCK & CO., CHI CAGQ, revision of our political history. Mr. Bryan is slated to become Theodore Roosevelt's successor, and there will be no more bear hunts. Nashville Tennesscean Mr. Bryan has spoken clearly and fully, and the issue before the democrats of thin nountrv is nlain. Those who fear an open fight for prirciple and democracy must seeK anotner can didate, and those who think the party has a stronger and more avail able candidate should lose no time in finding him and naming him. Those who believe in the principles for which Mr. Bryan stands so con spicuously, and are willing to make the battle for them, and realize that any other man in the party, should begin now to prepare for the final struggle in the convention. For it is there that tho battle for principle will be fought, and it is there that the last word of democratic differences must be spoken. It is our belief that if the democrats shall convene, get together on a ringing, aggressive platform of principle and reform, and nominate the man who more than any other stands for these things, the party will enter the campaign with the strongest chances of suc cess, and with this, belief we shall do our part toward the proper con centration of political sentiment and opinion on Mr. Bryan's nomination.
