from Paris says: "M Kurino, tho

day is quoted as making tho impor
tant statemont that the series of
treaties between Groat Britain,
Franco, Russia and Japan, guaran
teeing tho territorial status quo in
tho far oast, implied an agreement
to provent other countries from ac
quiring territory thoro. Minister
Kurino denied that the Franco-Japanese,
entente was in any way aimed
at the. United States, adding: 'Japan
in spite of the San Francisco inci
dent, has always been most sympa
thetic to tho United States because
sho was the first to treat tho Japar
nose people ,on a footing of equality.
If Japan could obtain advantages
from an understanding with the
Unitod States it is entirely probable
that the government at Tokio would
not hesitate to negotiate with Wash

Tho Chicago Journal prints a story
seeking to show that Charles H.
Moyor, president of the Western Fed
oration of Miners, who was about to
be tried at Boise, Idaho, for com
plicity in the kiUing of former Gov
ernor Stuenenberg served a term for
burglary in 1886 in the Illinois nen-
itontiary at Joliet. Moyer denies
that he is the same party and it is
claimed that this is a false charge
made by the Iinkertons.
On May 9 a son was born to the
king and queen of Spain. There-was
great rejoicing throughout the king
dom. '
Senator Piatt of New York says he
will not be a candidate for re-election
to the senate. Incidentally he
says that ho selected Mr. Roosevelt,
on the latter's return from Cuba, as a
republican candidate for governor of
New York.

The Navy
In every community there is some young
man who ought to be m the Navy. His in
clination, ability and ambition is such that he
would surely succeed.
If there is no Navy Recruiting Station near
his home, he can secure full information of how,
when and where to apply for enlistment, by
writing to the Bureau of Navigation, Navy De
partment, Washington, D. C. The
U. S. Navy
offers a future to American hoys and young men. Appli
cants must be of good health, good character, and between
the ages of 17 and 35 years. Vacancies in all branches of
the service. Unusual opportunities for rapid advancement
to thoe who prove efficient.
The term of enlistment is four years. Pay, $16 00 to
pjo.00 per month, including board, medical attendance and
clothing allowance at first enlistment.
Accepted applicants are assigned either to U. S. Naval
