change in the financial laws or tho
tariff law, and denied that they in
tended any departure irom the prin
ciples of free government.
The republican ticket, headed by
President McKinley and Theodoro
Roosevelt of New York, was again
successful, the popular plurality be
ing 849,455. The electoral voto stood,
McKinley and Koosevelt, 292; Bryan
and Stevenson, 155. Tho campaign or
1900 did not excite as much interest
as the preceding campaign, the total
vote being practically tho same in
15)00 as it was in 189G.
In the foregoing narrative an at
tempt has been made to present a his
tory of the democratic party from its
organization to the present time, and
the party's position on public issues
has been shown by quotations fiom
the platforms adopted by its national
conventions. While the platforms aro
not so specific as laws, and not so
elaborate as speeches, thoy are prob
ably a better index to the general
thought and purpose of parties than
either laws and speeches for the rea
son that laws are often compromises,
and speeches may represent tho Indi
vidual opinions of the speakers rather
than the conclusion of tho party, while
platforms are written by delegates
chosen for that purpose.
It will be seen that tho party has
met with successes and reverses,, but
it is also noticeiblo that it has ad
hered to its principles regardless of
tho Immediato effect of those prin
ciples upon it. For Instance, It was
defeated In 1840, and yet tho platform
of 1840 was constantly reaffirmed and
reiterated for 20 years ifterward. I ho
platform of 1892 reafilrmed and even
made stronger tho platform of 1888,
upon which tho party had suffered
dofcat. As the purpose of this article
is mprely to present as clearly as pos
sible, tho nttitude of tho democratic
part,y. on public questions, it would bo
out of place to entor upon tho defenso
of, tho party's principles.
It may bo .said, however, In conclu
sion, that thoro is today and will con
tinue to be an imperative noed for a
party thoroughly committed to tho
defenso of tho inalicnaolo rights of
tho individual .ami to local self-government,
and jealous of tho encroach
mente of federal power. Even when
such a party is not inlpowcr, it excr
clses a potent Influence in molding
public opinion and in restraining ex
cesses, becnuso it Js very quick to
champion tho cause of an individual
whoso rights have been trespassed
upon, or tho cause of a community
whose rights have been ignored. In
proportion as tho organization is true
to the principles promulgated by Jef
ferson and defended by Jackson, It
may hope to appeal to the confidence
of thoso who seek neither fnvoiltlsm
nor privileges, but aro content to en
joy , tho blessings of a government
in which each Individual is protected
in tho enjoyment of llfo and liberty
and in tho pursuit of happiness.
