the examination some interesting evi
dence was introduced tending to show
that Mr. Schwab had attempted to
bribe the president of the shipbuild
ing company to a certain form of re
organization of the company to which
the president of the concern objected.
Several letters written by Mr. Schwab
in regard to the affairs of the ship
building company were introduced and
read in court.
James King Qracie, an uncle by
marriage of President-Roosevelt, died
at his home in New York city on No
vember 24, and in consequence the
White house is in mourning. Mr.
Gracie was a well known banker and
was born in New York in 1S39. He
married a sister of the president's
father.
The Turkish council of ministers at
Constantinople are deliberating on the
Macedonian reform scheme, according
to a cablegram finder date of Novem
ber 23. There seems to be pronounced
difference of opinion among the min
isters regarding the reply to be sub
mitted to the Austrian and Russian
note, but an earnest effort is being
made to arrive at a conclusion.
The street car men of Chicago who
have been on a strike for some time
returned to work on November 25, the
agreement made between their counsel
and the street car company being
ratified by the men.
It was reported on November 25
from Paris, Ky., that on account of
failure to provide "Jim Crow" cars,
the Paris-Lexington Interurban com
pany is subject to fines approximating
$180,000, the maximum fine under the
law for such failure being $500 for
each offense and this company made
eighteen runs a day for the twenty
days the line has been in operation.
A compromise was effected whereby
tne company pays a $500 fine and puts
on the desired cars.
Startling disclosures are being made
in the Cripple Creek district in Colo
rado in connection with the recent
blowing up of a mine there. It is an
nounced that a plot has been discov
ered whereby it was intended to de
stroy several other mines in the dis
trict. General Bell is in command in
the district and has given orders to
recruit two more regiments in the
Colorado national guard, which will
be used to preserve order.
A disastrous fire on November 26 in
the wholesale district of Omaha, Neb.,
caused the death of four firemen and
a property loss of about $500,000.
It seems that the Colombian author
ities are not permitting any passen
gers, mail or cargo to be Carried from
Colombian ports to Colon or Panama,
and that the recognition of the inde
pendence of Panama by this govern
ment has caused exceeding bitterness
of feeling toward the United States la
that country. Recently the United
States consul at Cartagena was
stopped when on his way to visit the
captain of a British ship and ordered
to go baolc by Colombian soldiers.
The provisional government recent
ly established in San Domingo has
been refused acknowledgement by the
United States, and the demand mado
hy the San Domingo government that
the arbitration board appointed to ar
bitrate the Santo Domingo improve
ment company master be withdrawn,
has been denied by the United States

Captain Carter was convicted five
years ago by a court-martial of con
spiracy to defraud the government. It

President Guy E. Miller of the lo
cal miners' union at Telluride, Colo.,
was arrested recently in an uncere
monious manner, and was ordered re
leased on November 27. This arrest
has caused much disturbance among
the miners as somo claim that Miller
was arrested without provocation, and
it is feared that the action of tlio au
thorities In handling the labor trou
bles in Colorado only serve to render
the situation more acute.
On November 27 Grover Cleveland
sent a letter to the editor of tho
Brooklyn Eagle wherein he positive
ly declines to become the nominee of
the democratic party for the presi
dency next year. The Brooklyn Eagle
thereupon announced that it would
transfer its support for that position
to Judge Alton B. Parker.
