' The Art of Living Log.
Wm F. Butler of Milwaukee has
published a now and Improved English
version of the treatise of the cele
brated Venetian centenarian, Louis
Cornaro. The book is entitled "The
Art of Living Long," and contains the
essays of that distinguished Venetian
together with essays on the same sub
ject' by Joseph Addison, Lord Bacon
and Sir William Temple. The book is
as interesting as it is instructive, land
giyes valuable advice to those who
are willing to make a sacrifice today
in order to' fortify the body against
premature old age and the inroads of
disease. The book can be secured from
the publisher, 57 University building,
Milwaukee, Wis.
The Bible In Shakospeare.
The Winona Publishing Co., Winona
Lake, Ind., has recently issued a vol
ume by Wm. Burgess, entitled "The
Bible in Shakespeare," it being a
study of the relation of the works of
Shakespeare to the Bible with com
parisons, quotations, references, para
phrases and illusions. The author is
familiar with the theme, having pre
viously presented "Lay Sermons From
the Bible in Shakespeare." It is high
ly interesting to compare the works
of the greatest of poets with the Book
of Books, and see how many of the
poet's strongest and most beautiful
phrases are drawn from holy writ.

The Equitable Publishing Co., of
Allentown, Pa., has issued a book by
John Wryland entitled "The Travels of
John Wryland." While it contains a
narration of the author's visit to
Tibet, it at the same time discusseB
the. geography, histories, laws and In

views that are useful to those who are
grappling with the problems of the
present day.

Lions Interfere with Work.
The romance or railways is a thing
which the poets are very properly try
ing to make people perceive. The ro
mance of lions and rhinoceroses, on
the other hand, is admitted to exist,
even by their worst enemies. When
the two kinds of romance clash stir
ring times ensue. H. B. Molesworth
makes this plain in an article on "The
Uganda Railway," in tho pages of
Public Works. The progress of the
work, he tells us, was much interfered
with by the depredations of man-eating
lions. At Tsavo twenty-eight men
were taken by lion3 in a very short
time. There was a panic among the
men; traps were made; the coolies
slept in trees, in the water tanks at
the stations, in covered goods wagons
and finally iron huts were built for
them". Mr. Patterson, an engineer on
the line, shot several lions, and among
them two which were the Thief cul
prits. A lion entered a first-class carriage
on the siding of Kimao Station in
June, 1900, and carried away Mr. Ry
dall, the assistant superintendent of
police. In July of 190 four lions
were killed and hreewounded at Ki
mao Station, and two men were taken
by lions near Kui. A large lion was
trapped at Kimao in August, and then
no more were taken lor som time.
Such minor troubles as the telegraph
being damaged by giraffes and the
train being delayed by running into a
rhinoceros, Although not usual in rail
way construction, were not serious.

MR. BRYAN ON THE SOUTH.
Mr. Bryan's vlevs on southern race
problems are sane. His feeling for the
negro Is kind; his interest in tho
white comes first. His loyalty to the
glittering generalities penned by Jef
ferson Is strong, but he tempers tlum
with actual conditions, and proceeds in
the spirit of science. He points out
the influence of locality on opinion,
when he reminds northerners that
they have never had a single officer
chosen for them by negro votes. He
recalls the negro legislatures of re
construction days. He admits that his
feelings, tfeing what they are in Ne
braska, would differ with the state in
which he happened to reside. Mr.
Eryan has taken his stand upon the
right spot. The advantages of state
government were never more aptly
illustrated than at .present For a
state half black to receive color legis
lation from states entirely white is
pure injustice. If Abraham. Lincoln
had lived, the fourteenth and fifteenth
amendments would not exist In their
present form. The bitterness of the
south would" be less. Her condition
would be better Her problems would
bo easier. Lincoln was docile to ex
perience. He knew a question before
he decided It He felt his way. His
Idea of reconstruction was to put the
fnsu In tho hands of those southern
ers In each state who had favored the
Union, gradually extending it; not to
deliver it to blacV.s and to white
northern adventurers. Lincoln was
able to express abstract principles
with tremendous eloquence, but prin
ciple never exfsted for him In t vac
uum, separated from actual conditions,
as It does for many northern orators
and publicists, who would settle race
problems with simple moral laws. We
regret tho choice of Mississippi in pre
ferring an agitator to a better man for
governor, but would rather have such
errors made than to see realized some
current talk about enforcing tho
amendments. The negro question
means one thing in Georgia, another
in Mississippi, a third in Maryland,
and a little in Pennsylvania, Mr.
Bryan puts this point more clearly
than we have for some time seen it
put, and e congratulate him on his
lucidity. Let national politics have as
little as possible to do with a ques
tion of which the solution differs with
