It also bought the $3,000,000 of common stock of the Lorillard com pany. The common stock of these two .par ent companies are controlled by a holding corporation known as the Con solidated Tobacco company, which ha3 an authorized issue of $40,000,000 of common stock, on which a dividPnd of 20 per cent has been paid. To buy the common stock of the two controlled companies it issued $166,593,400 of 4 per cent debentures, and . exchanged $100 of these for each share of com mon stock of the Continental com pany and $200 for each common share of the American company. 'TherHayatia 'Tobacco company, with a capital of $5,000,000 of preferred etock and $30,000,000 of common stock, and debentures authorized to the ex tent of $10,000,000, was organized to buy up the Havana Commercial com pany in order to control the Havana leaf trade. This vast aggregation of capital amounts in its entirety to $457,093,400, of which by far the greater part is represented by the profits squeezed out of producers and consumers. This is an extraordinary testimony to the money that is to be made in the work ing up of one of Kentucky's chief etaples. The interests which produce and market this commodity are de eerving of better treatment than they have received so far, and it would be well for the managers of the tobacco trust to be more liberal in their prices. The. profits are immense, be yond a doubt; and the opportunity to engage in such a remunerative busi ness ought to be rewarded with lib eral treatment. If not, the growing of Kentucky's great staple will be dis couraged, and in due time there will arise the mighty power of public opinion that will teach Mr. J. B. Duke a.lesson of which he and other trust formers stand in need. On the other hand, a recognition of the rights of the producers will further good feeling. Louisville Courier-Journal. A Macedonian Cry. It is said that the Macedonian lead ers declare thai unless the powers in tervene the war in Macedonia against the Turkish power will be prosecuted to the end.
