It would mean that, under the influence and guidance of commercialism and the supposed necessities of trade, this country had loft the old ways of the fathers, as defined by written consti tutions, and entered a new way, in fol lowing which tho American people will lose sight of and become in .ifferent to those principles which had been sup posed to bo essential to real liberty. It would mean that if this people do not retrace their steps, if the prin ciples now announced should become firmly established, the time may not bo far distant, when, under the exac tions of trade and commerce, and to gratify an ambition to become the greatest political power in all tho earth, the United States will acquire territories in every direction, which are inhabited by human beings over which territories to bo called 'depen dencies' we will exercise absolute do minion, and where inhabitants will be regarded as 'subjects'- to be con ti oiled as congress may seo fit, not as tho constitution requires, nor as the people governed may wish. I stand by the doctrine that the constitution is the supreme law in every territory, as soon as it comes under the sover eign dominion of the United States for purposes of civil administration and whose inhabitants aro under its entire authority and jurisdiction." Lamar (Mo.) Leader. As to Fishing. Mr. William J. Bryan, editor of The Commoner, comes out in a. manly statement to the effect that he is not seeking leadership In the party, and is not concerned about his political posi tion in future years. "No man," says he, "is in position to do his duty who is controlled by the ambition tobe a leader, or who is always looking out for his own political future. Leader ship is not secured in that way, neith er can one secure his political posi tion in future years by centering his thoughts upon his own interests." That is a noble saying and full of philosophy. The self-seeking man is not the man to lei in any good cause. The man who is always thinking about his own selfish interests, wheth er it be in politics or in any other phase of life, cannot bo a public ben efactor and is unworthy to lead. Every man should be ambitious to succeed in whatever he undertakes, and it is ontirely laudable for a man in politics to aspire to tho highest position in the gift of his constituency. But his ambition should be Incidental and subservient to his duty to his fel lows. His chief aim should be to pro mote the welfare of those whom he, would serve, and he should at all times be willing to sacrifice his own personal ambitions to the good of the cause. These are the men who have accomplished great good in all ages; these are the men whose memory i3 honored today. "He that is greatest shall be your servant." It is unself ish, sacrificial service that makes a man truly great, that makes him both good and great, and there is no great ness worthy of the name without goodness. We have a certain admira tion for the famous military men of other days, for the famous politicians, and for all men who by their genius and daring have achieved success in their undertakings. But the men whose memory is loved are the men who served their day and generation in affection; the men who thought more of humanity than they thought of themselves, whose great aim in life was to do good. These are the men who are worthy to lead and these aro the men whom the people love to follow. Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch. Louis F. Post. The editors of The Independent had a genial hour with Louis F. Post when he was in the city last week as one of the orators at the Fairview Fourth of July celebration. Mr. Post uses just as elegant, strong and forceful Eng lish in his public addresses as he does when he writes for his paper, Tho Public, and his address was what was expected from a man of his great at tainments. As a writer, a thinker and economist Mr. Post has a national reputation, and the audience that list ened to him had a rare entertainment. The Independent expresses its best wishes for Mr. Post and his paper. Nebraska Independent, Lincoln, Neb. Three For One Prairie Farmer Combination. ...-. .., Bejular Price.
