A Cutting Retort.
Tho Russian official! aro coming
back at tho United States In return
for tho protests mado hero against the
massacre of the Jows in a way that
makes tho fur fly. They say that the
United States government is tho last
government on earth that should pro
test, having Itself killed 300,000 Fili
pinos. Some it tortured to death, in
cluding at least one Christian priest,
others, it herded in rcconccntrado
enraps where they died of disease and
were charged from 25 to 100 per cent
profit on tho rice that was given them
to keep them alive. Whole provinces,
and not simply ono section of a city,
were made a "howling wilderness."
Then these Russians, after enumerat
ing these cruel things, of which tho
whole world has knowledge, say that
tho people of the Unitod States had
better remove the beam from their
own eyo before they undertake to re
move the mote from their neighbor's.
Tho truth about the matter is that
imperialism has destroyed tho moral
influence of this nation, once bo
strong even in the remote corners of
tho earth. There has been a damn
ing blot placed on the unsullied honor
of this nation by the republican party.
Whether that blot can ever be ef
faced or not depends upon how soon
tho republican party is overthrown
and this nation goes back to the Dec
laration of Independence. The hope
of the oppressed of every land for a
hundred years was In tho United
States. Then all at onco "the land of
the free and tho home of tho brave"
turned aside from Its constitution and
all its traditions and adopted tho im
perialism of the kings of the olJ
world. There is no beacon light ot
liberty now left on tho whole earth
and the hope of the earth has been
turned into despair. -Lincoln (Nob.)
