The Irish land bill so much dis cussed recently has been postponed for further" consideration until June 29. Major General Frank Wheaton, U. S. A., retired, died at Washington on June 18, aged seventy years. General Wheaton was a native of Rhode Isl and and in 1850 served as assistant on the United States and Mexican boundary survey; in 1855 he was made lieutenant in the First United States cavalry, and afterwards served with distinction through the civil war. On Juno 18 charges were preferred against Charles Hedges, superinten dent of the city delivery service of the l)ostoffice department at Washington, alleging that he had pressed claims before congress, solicited employes In the service to take stock in mining companies and other allegations which are now being investigated by the inspectors of the postoffice depart ment On the same day the postmas ter general designated Edward F. Kimball to act temporarily as super intendent of the money order system to succeed James T. Metcalf, who was removed on June 17 on charges of indiscretion. Twenty men wero. killed and thir teen injured by an explosion In the lyddite factory at the Woolwich ar senal near London on June 18. The building was completely wrecked. It seems that the new government of Servia is to have the sanction of the powers of Europe. On June 18 it was announced that Russia had joined with Austria in recognizing the new king, although urging the punishment of the regicides. It Is not yet knowa what action the new king will take in this matter. At the cabinet metelng in Wash iugton on June 19 the time was taken up by discussions of the questions in volved in the decision of the United States government to disregard the injunction of the court of Virginia and seize the incomplete gunboat Gal 'eston at the ship yards in Richmond. Attorney General Knox had prepared an opinion strongly affirming the right of the government to take this action and declaring that the court had ex ceeded its authority. The jury in the case of Curtis Jett and Thomas White at Jackson, Ky., on trial for the murder of Attorney J. B. Marcum, did not agree on a ver dict and the men will have another trial which will take place at Cyn thiana, more than 100 miles away from Jackson. The change of venue in this case has excited much inter est as has the whole progress of the case. The thirty-first national saengerfest at St Louis, Mo., closed on June 19. It is estimated that, this festival brought to St Louis over 50,000 strangers, and it is regarded as having been one of the most successful musi cal festivals ever held. Items of Interest. The amount is more than half a million pounds and the value ?3,500,000. Speaking of cremation, the London Lancet expresses the opinion that the chances of a living body thought to be dead being reduced to ash .s are too Indefinitely remote to merit attention. In the vast majority of Instances there is no real foundation for the stories of premature burial or in tended burial. Tho truth about the matter is that imperialism has destroyed tho moral influence of this nation, once bo strong even in the remote corners of tho earth. There has been a damn ing blot placed on the unsullied honor of this nation by the republican party. Whether that blot can ever be ef faced or not depends upon how soon tho republican party is overthrown and this nation goes back to the Dec laration of Independence. The hope of the oppressed of every land for a hundred years was In tho United States. Then all at onco "the land of the free and tho home of tho brave" turned aside from Its constitution and all its traditions and adopted tho im perialism of the kings of the olJ world.
