Sir Olivor Mowat, lieutenant gov
ernor of Ontario, Canada, died on
April 19 at Government house, Otta

as premier of Ontario from 1872 to
189G, in which year he resigned to be

On April 19 United States Minister
Conger at Peking reported that an
attempt had bcon made in tho district
of Yuticn, about 100 miles west of
Peking, to rcorganlzo the Boxer move
ment, but tho prompt action of tho
vicoroy suppressed it This action of
tho government is meeting with favor
and is Rooked upon as an indication
that peaco-will bo maintained.
Ricclotti Garibaldi, leader of tho
Italian volunteers in Greece during
tho war with Turkey, has organized an
oxpodition to free Macedonia from
Turkey, and it is reported that he
Is receiving encouragement in his ef
forts from all quarters of tho world.
South Africa has offered to raise a
battalion of yeomanry and cavalry
and many otters of volunteers havo
como to him from tho United States.
A movement is on foot in Washing
ton to re-establish military divisions
in this country, with several depart
ments included in each. It is said
that there are to bo three divisions,
tho Atlantic, the Mississippi, and tho
Missouri and Pacific. Each will be
in command of a major general of the
army. The Atlantic division will be
composed of tho present department
of the east, divided into two depart
ments, the old department of the gulf
to be re-established with headquar
ters at Atlanta, Ga. The middle divi
sion is to be composed of the present
departments of tho lakes, Missouri,
Dakota and Texas, while tho Pacific
division will be composed of the de
partments of California, Columbia and
Colorado.
On April 20 the request of the North
ern Securities company that tho re
cent decree against the combination
bo so far suspended as to permit tho
payment by tho railroads of the reg
ular May dividends to the Securities
empany was granted by United States
Circuit Judge Sanborn" at St Paul,
Minn. These dividends' will amount
to a little over $4,000,000.
A sensational development of the
investigation of postofflce- affairs at
Washington took place on April 23
when Postmaster General Payne an
nounced the summary dismissal of
James N. Tyner, assistant attorney
general for the postoffice department
The dismissal is made on startling
charges concerning the disappearance
of certain records and papers.
The recent appeal made by the trus
tees of the Tuskegee Normal and In
dustrial institute in Alabama, which
institution is presided over by Booker
T. Washington, met with a response
in tho shape of a contribution of $600,
000 toward the endowment fund from
Andrew Carnegie, on April 23.
It is asserted in railway circles that
tho sale and transfer of tho Oregon
Short Lino trackage from Salt Lake
City to Calientcs will be consummated
about the first of June to Senator
Clark of Montana, who is already in
possession of several railroad lines.
It is estimated that tho intention is
to expend about $50,000,000 on this
line.
An Associated press cablegram from
St Petersburg, under date of April
23, says: Twenty-fLvb Jews were
killed and 275 were wounded, many o
them fatally, during anti-semitic riots
at Kischineff capital of Bessarabia,
April 20, when a number of workmen
organized an attack on the Jewish in
habitants. The minister of the in
terior has ordered the adoption of
special measures to restore order in
the town and ' district.
President Roosevelt left Yellowstone
Park on April 24 and resumed his tour
of the west Before leaving, he par
ticipated in the laying of the corner
stone of the new gate at the northern
entrance to the park.
It was announced from Berlin on
April 24 that the governments of Prus
sia and of the Grand Duchy of Meck
lenburg have decided to expel the
Mormon missionaries, of whom there
are 145 in Germany and ninety in
Prussia, on the ground that they are
propagating a form of religious belief
incompatible with the laws of the state
and public morals and because poly
gamy is not excluded from their doctrines.

Pa., on April 20, that the Philadelphia
& Reading Coal and Iron company had
forced a lockout at every one of their
colliorios in that district because their
men had refused to work the full nino
hours on Sunday. This lockout af
fects upward of 30,000 men.

portion of La Crpsso, Wis., on April
21 caused a loss of property amount
ing to $750,000.
In the municipal elections held re
cently in Illinois, B. N. Woodruff, re
publican, was elected mayor of Peoria
by a majority of 2,000. In Blooming
ton tho democrats won, electing Mor
rison mayor by 700 majority, he being
tho first democratic mayor in eighteen
years elected in that city. In Joliet.
