lin that as soon as tho reciprocity
treaty between tho United States and
Cuba is ratiilcd, Germany will ask
both tho Cuban and tho United States
for identical privileges. Other Eu
ropean governments may follow Ger
many's lead in this respect
Tho Soneca Indians now residing in
a reservation in Canada have ex
pressed a desire to settle in Oklahoma.
Tho Indians numbor only about 1,500

On March 17 tho state department
received news of a revolutoln in Uru
guay. The dispatch came from United
States Consul Swan at Montevideo
and was as follows: "Montevideo,
March 17. Revolution has broken
out. Railway destroyed Eight thou
sand men are camped outside and aro
marshalling to attack the citv. Tho
revolution is serious."
On March 17 the people of Manaro
neck, N. Y., decided at thoir village

drew Carnegie.
Thoro seems to bo a great difference
of opinion among tho railways of the
country as to tho moaning of tho re
cently enacted Elkins law. A meet
ing of the Western Passenger associa
tion was held at Chicago on March 17
to discuss tho meaning of this law as
applied to passenger rates and serious
difficulty waB found in arriving at an
agreement on tho subject
It was recently announced that the
Venezuelan government accepts with
out reserve tho protocols signed by
Ministor Bowen and the representa
tives of the powers at Washington.
It Is feared that serious trouble
may ensue between the citizens of
Parkersburg, W. Va., and the Balti
more & Ohio railway on account of
the arbitrary measures adopted by
tho railroad. On March 17 the rail
way brought a force of men into the
town before daylight and began to
lay a track for five blocks over one-of
the principal streets of tho city. This
so incensed the citizens that thn firn

road officials, has been impeached on
this account by tho city council.

It was reported from Bismarck, N.
D., on March 19 that Governor White
had signed the bill amending the law
relating to druggists' permits. Much
pressure was brought to bear on the
governor to veto it It requires 80
per cent of the freeholders and 70 per
cent of tho women in the town or tho
ward where tho drug store Is located
to sign a petition before a liquor per
mit can bo obtained.
A memorial to tho late J. Sterling
Morton, the founder of Arbor Day, is
to be erected in his home town, Ne
braska City. Tho statue is to be a full
size figure and will cost about $15,000,
the work being done by Rudolph Ev
ans, the sculptor.
In a speech made by Colonial Sec
retary Chamberlain in tho English
house of commons on March 19 ho
stated that 100,000 Boers had been
repatriated and the government had
given $75,000,000 toward tho expenses
of thoir resettlement
It was reported recently that the
house and senate of Missouri adopted
a resolution submitting an amendment
to the constitution, requiring all Mis
souri railroads to grant free transpor
tation over their lines .in Missouri
to state officials and legislators dur
ing their official termB.
It is said that President Roosevelt
has agreed to participate in the lay
ing of tho cornerstone of tho Lewis
and Clark exposition May 21 at Port
land. The president also has con
sented to take part in the testimonial
to Admiral Clark, formerly of tho
battleship Oregon.
Two mass meetings of citizens of
Boston havo recently been held in
that city "to protest against the sup
pression of truth about tho Philip
pines and praying for further official
inquiry into conditions there."
March 20, the anniversary of the
death of Louis Kossuth, was marked
in Buda Pesth by unusual student de
monstrations and collisions with tho
police of the city. After a numbor of
arrests had been made, the students
dispersed.
A serious break in the Mississippi
levee near Memphis, Tenn., on. March
2o crfused the ruin of many fine plan
tations along the course of tho river.
Many families were made homeless
and destitute and flocked into Memphis
for shelter and food.

forolgn element. Missionaries are
flocking into the cities, the country be
ing no longer safe for foreigners.
