    Eye Specialist
Admitted to Board
Of Otolaryngology
CHICAGO—(ANP)—Dr. James
M. Richardsbn, prominent eye
specialist, last week passed the
examination for a diploma of the
American Board of Otolaryngol
ogy. He already is a member of
the American Board of Ophthal
mology, and now is one of 13
physicians in the Chicago area
holding membership in both
boards.
Dr. Chester Chinn, of New
York, is the only other Negro
member of both boards.
Dr. Richardson recently com
pleted post graduate work at the
Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary and
was appointed to the Ear, Nose
and Throat department of the
University of Illinois Medical
school.
An article written by Dr. Rich
ardson in 1942 has been included
in, and forms the basis for, the
chapter on Inflamation of the Tear
Gland in the textbook of Oph
thalmthalmology, Volume V, by
Sit Stewart Duke-Elder. The book
is considered standard reference
wrk for eye specialists.
A 1934 graduate of Howard Uni
versity, Dr. Richardson has been
the recipient of many honors in
his field. Among them are:
A fellow of Ophthalmology and
Otolaryngology in 1950; a certifi
cate for work with the Otolaryn
gology group at the University
of Illinois post graduate school,

NAACP Warns
Of Red Appeal
NEW YORK — The NAACP
warned its branches this week
to have nothing to do with an
appeal being circulated by the
so-called National Committee to
Defend Negro Leadership, which
it termed “a creation of the Com
munist party.”
The appeal, said the NAACP,
lumps together “legitimate” Ne
gro leaders who have encoun
tered various injustices, and the
indictments and convictions of
Communist leaders under the
Smith Act.
1950-51, and an appointment to
the Committee on Scientific Re
search Personnel by the War Man
power Commission.
He now is a fellow of the Chi
cago Institute of Medicine and
senior attending surgeon at Provi
dent Hospital. He is a member
of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

Appoint Former
Judge Waring
To ACLU Board
NEW YORK—(ANP)—Former
Federal Judge J. Waties Waring
last week was one of three per
sons appointed to the« board of
directors of the American Civil
Liberties Union for three-year
terms, it was announced this week.
James A. Wechsler, editor of
the New York Post, and Douglas
M. Black, president of the pub
lishing firm of Doubleday and
company, are the two other newly
appointed board members.

equality and ought to be ended at
once.
This now famous dissenting
opinion was rendered in the |
Clarendon county, S. C. school
case. Negroes are hoping that it
will become the majority opinion
of the U.S. Supreme court which
is scheduled to hear arguments
on appeals of the case, Dec. 8. !
Waring also is remembered for
his decision upholding the right
of Negroes in South Carolina to
participate in the Democratic pri
maries of that state.
Waring since has resigned from
his federal judgeship and now is
a resident of New York.
