    Negro Has Featured
In Campaign Smears
WASHINGTON, D.C.—“The Big
Smear” so currently being used in
the Presidential campaign Is
nothing new nor is it being used
as viciously as historians recall
from years past.
It’s an old, old technique
based on the premise that if
the lie is big enough, someone is
bound to believe it.
The “Negro” smear has been
attached to several Presidential
aspirants in years past.
Both Eisenhower and Steven
son are getting their share of
mudballs. How much they will
contribute to the victory or de
feat of either in the coming elec
tion is moot. But the mud-pies
are flying, nonetheless. The tech
nique is nothing new. It’s just an
old political custom and modern
times haven’t “refined” it in the
least.
