Groups Wants Recorder of Deeds Post Taken From President WASHINGTON (ANP) — The Federation of Citizens’ Associa tions here went on record last week as favoring the appointment of a recorder of deeds by District Commissioners instead of by the President. This resolution was adopted after President Truman had been quoted as saying he was not going 'to do anything about nominating ! another person for this office after his candidate, Earl Wayne Beck of Kansas City, Mo., had been turned down by the senate Dis trict committee. After the committee had voted 9-0 against Beck’s confirmation The Bread You Need for Energy the President remarked that if they don’t want a recorder of deeds, “it’s not my fault.” The following day Sen. Francis Chase (R., S. Dak.) introduced a bill which would switch the ap pointment of the recorder from the President’s jurisdiction to that of the commissioners. Although the office of the Dis trict recorder of deeds has been vacant for more than six months the work of recording property titles is being done just as it was before the Rev. Marshall L. Shep ard resigned last September to seek a similar office in Philadel phia. i Oliver Thornton, who has served as first deputy recorder for| nearly six years, is now doing the' work of the recorder. It has been reported that the office is keeping its work more nearly current than at any time since 1943. In the meantime the District is saving on the $8,340 annual salary that goes with the recorder’s job. Nearly six months ago the President nominated Beck for the District post. Later questions were raised in the Committee hearings regarding his eligibility. As a re suit of this hearing the nomination was turned down *md another hearing was held at the request of the nominee.
