NAACP Set
For Kansas

TOPEKA, Kan.—The legal at
tack by the NAACP on segrega
tion in elementary and secondary
schools moved into the Middle
west this week as NAACP at
torneys filed an amended com
plaint in Federal Court, seeking
the admission of Negro students
to grade schools of the First Kan
sas District in this city.
Since the statute which gives
Kansas cities the right to estab
lish separate schools is being di
rectly challenged in this suit, it is
likely that the case will be heard
by a three-judge Federal Court.|
Rulings of a three-judge court
may be appealed directly to the
United States Supreme Court.
The NAACP is asking the Court
to issue a permanent injunction
restraining the Topeka Board of
Education from setting up separ
ate schools for Negro and white
children.
Such segregation, the NAACP
contends, denies Negro children ;
educational opportunities equal to
those of white children and thus;
violates the Fourteenth Amend- j
ment to the U. S. Constitution.!
Two years ago, the NAACP won
a similar case, ending segregation
in the schools of Merriatn, Kan.
Attorneys handling the Topeka
case for the NAACP are Charles
E. Bledsoe of Topeka and assist
ant special counsel Robert L. Car
ter and Jack Greenberg of the
national office in New York.

annual formal lawn party Satur
day night. Due to the rain it was
held at the home of the presi
dent, Miss Jeanne Malone. Re
freshments were served. Other
members in the club are: Betty
and Hazel Wilson, Joyce Williams,
Betty Bowman, Delores Bowen
and Loretta McWilliams.

Miss Mary Sampson left this
week to spend three weeks at
Estes Park, Colo.

On June 25th, Mr. H. D. Den
ton was pleasantly surprised with
a birthday party given by his
family at the home of Mrs. Edith
Hill. A nice time was had by all.

few days in Omaha last week
