HOSEA, THE MAN AND HIS
MESSAGE
Scripture—Hosea

Hosea 4:6,
Sincere Repentance. The Proph
et Hosea called upon Israel to
repent of her sins. He tells the
people that Israel’s response to
the love and care of Jehovah in
the past has been that of the
foolish and the faithless. Now and
then there have been signs of
“light repentance.” The people
have said quite cheerily to one
another: “Come and let us return
unto Jehovah, for he hath torn,
and he will heal us; he hath smit
ten, and he will bind us up” (6,1)
All this means in effect, don’t
worry. We have slipped in some
matters of ritual; we have failed
somewhere; but He is the good
God, He will surely care for His
own. This is the backsliding and
easy repentance of which the
prophet accuses Israel. Israel is
like the victim of a virulent dis
ease who will not go to the only
physician who can cure him. This
is not just Israel’s mistake. Have
we ever stopped for one moment
to think what would be needed
to transfor this world into an ideal
kingdom? Surely this: that each
of us would respond to God in
accordance with His great love
for us. It is our destruction that
we refuse. We seem not to know
the meaning of the term “repent
ance” for our wrong doing.
Gypsy Smith, the great evan
gelist, once explained the mean
ing of repentance. He said, “Re
pentance is turning from sin to

your heart and getting rid of
the thing that has been your
curse, the enslaving passion, the
captivity, the predominating force
in your existence, the blackening
thing ... of your soul in your
dragging it out and saying, ‘There
Lord, that is it, and I will die
before I commit it again. I turn
from it now and forever’.”

Hello folks:
Here I am again this week
bringing you the exciting news.
The annual school election was
held last Friday evening. Mr. Sam
York was elected treasurer.
The bazaar given by the mem
bers of the Methodist church was
quite a success. A short program
was presented by some of the
youth of the community. Piano
solos: LaVern Green, Shirley York,
Nova Barker, and myself. Solo,
Willia Mae Hayes. Duet, Willa
Mae and myself.
The glee club and band of El
wood high school participated in
the Doniphan County Apple Blos
som Festival at Troy last Thurs
day evening. Peggy Kuschell was
our representative for Elwood.
She received a trophy and five
silver dollars.
Mrs. Emma Smith passed away
Sunday morning. Her funeral was
held at the Bethel A.M.E. church
Wednesday at 2 p. m. Rev. Mr.
Monroe was in charge.

What about our “leading peo
ple” today—both in the high
places of government and in our
church—what about you and me?
Today it can also be said that
there is little or no truth, nor
goodness, nor knowledge of God
in the land. Conditions were de
plorable when Hosea made this
statement, because the govern
ment was not stable, and because
the priests and prophets were cor
rupt. Instead of teaching the life
giving knowledge of God they re
jected it themselves in their lives.
We believe that each of us is a
priest in the sight of God, we may
each of us go to God ourselves.
Destruction is not God’s last word,
if we truly repent our misdoings
God will be merciful. Genuine re
pentenance and a turning to God
will bring down His blessings upon
us. Now is the time to seek the
Lord to call upon Him and to fol
low Him. Some have sowed seeds
of goodness after scrapping the
ground, this is folly. Only when
the “fallow ground” is broken up
will the seed take root.

the hospital. He is getting along
pretty well.
Mr. Veto Watson is also home
from the hospital. He is doing
nicely.
The Boy Scouts attended the
Kansas Relays in Lawrence Sat
urday. They reported having a
fine time.
The women of the Baptist
church are presenting a fashion
show at the city hall, Friday eve
ning. Everyone come and see what
the latest styles are these days.
The Boy Scout Jamboree was
held April 28 and 29 at the audi
torium in St. Joseph. Troop 129
participated. W. H. Brady is
Scoutmaster of that troop.
Rev. Mr. Smith of Kansas City,
Kas., visited Elwood last Wednes
day evening and brought us a
very fine message at the evening
services at the Baptist church.
