LIVING BEAUTIFULLY (C.L.S.) “No one but yourself can make life beautiful, no one can be pure, honorable and loving for you.” —J. R. Miller. There are people who save an outward attitude of kindness, courtesy, forbearance and appre ciation for those in street, store or acquaintances. In the home—that little world of their own—their best traits are laid upon the shelf with their hat, and all the uncontrolled nagging, faultfind ing, sarcasm, and petty hopeful ness of their nature is let loose on the members of the family. Beautiful living should be practiced at home, among those we love most, and where humor, gentle s p ee c h, understanding, courtesy, and praise are most de served. The humblest home may radi ate contentment, cheerfulness, comradeship. Beautiful living must begin within ourselves; practiced at home religiously, then our conduct in the world will take care of itself. One must “seek beauty.” It is everywhere for us to see and en joy. Keep worries and fears away in the background as far as pos sible. Psychologists tell us of the harmful effects of fear on the mental and physical health of children. Yet these bogies of fear, worry, and “depression” are constantly taking away that feel ing of safety and refuge which a child should have for his home. HOUSEHOLD HINTS 1 By Mrs. Brevy Miller Phone 2-4051 J I was very happy when the edi tor of THE VOICE asked me to do an article on Urban League Culinary Art people. There are just so many in the persons of Bettie Rose Huston, Doris and Birdie Powell, Vonna and Eloise Finley among the younger group and in the Mary Bethune club there are numerous good cooks. In the Guild I am happy to say the same, and I am sure anyone attending any of the dinners where either group of these ladies have planned and prepared the meals will agi’ee with me. I am asking that any of the ladies that will send me her favorite recipe we will be happy to publish it. This week we are happy to pre sent Bettie Rose’s favorite cake recipe.
