| Social Briefs | i By Mrs. Basilia Bell Ph. 5-5531 i . _ _ Two new members were re ceived in the Y. M. C. club at its last meeting, January 19, accord- , ing to the club reporter, Virginia Botts. They were Mr. and Mrs. Temoir Terry and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Williams. After the busi ness meeting games furnished the entertainment for the evening. Mrs. Georgia Parker of Minne apolis, Minn., who was called to Lincoln because of the death of her mother, Mrs. Mary Lewis, was accompanied by Mrs. Beulah Sellers Smith. Mrs. Margaret Bell was ad mitted to a local hospital Sun day. Mrs. Bell is the wife of Walter Bell, jr. Out-of-town persons attending the funeral of Mrs. Annie G. Smith were a brother, Charles Burt of Detroit, and three nieces, Miss Florence Reid of Detroit, Miss LaNelle Newton and Mrs. Adalaide Simington both of Kan sas City, Mo., and the Rev. Alfred Newton of Beatrice, Neb. Mrs. Virginia Johnson, 2301 S, attended the funeral of her sis ter, Mrs. Tennessee Bowler, whose funeral was held Sunday, January 30 in Hope, Ark. The Lincoln Branch of the NAACP plans to have a Historic Tea to climax the observance of Negro History Week (February 6 to 13, 1949). The Urban League will join the NAACP in sponsor ing this affair. There will be a round table discussion of the Ne gro race *in America. Several young people of Junior high school, high school and universi ty level will join other citizens in discussing the Negro from his African background to present day accomplishments. Individuals and organizations are invited and urged to attend this meeting at the Urban League, Sunday, Feb ruary 13 at 3:30 p. m., according to Rev. Robert L. New President For New York Urban League By Conrad Clark NEW YORK. (ANP). Charles H. Silver, executive sales man ager of the American Woolen Co., and president of the Beth Israel hospital, was elected this week to the board of the Urban League of Greater New York, according to an announcement released by Edward S. Lewis, executive di rector of the league. Among the other persons elected to the board vacancies were P. J. Ebbott, vice president, Chase National bank; Urbain C. LeGost, assistant vice president, Dollar Savings bank and Mrs. Grace Rosenthal and Rabbi Charles E. Shulman of Riverdale Temple. A board member of the Beth Israel hospital for more than 25 years, Silver is also a vice presi dent of the Alfred E. Smith Me morial foundation, an overseer of the Jewish Theological seminary, trustee of Yeshiva university and a vice president of the Grand Street Boys’ association. Langston Whips Lincoln to Tie Game Series OKLAHOMA CITY, Okl. (ANP). Led by center Nathaniel Neal's 18 points, I^angston’s cagers defeated Lincoln (Mo.) 58 to 46 to revenge a previous 62 to 58 de feat by the invaders earlier last week. Coach Zip Gayles’ Oklahomans built up a quick 16 to 6 lead early in the game. At the half Langston led 25 to 17. Lincoln rallied to within three points of the Lions, but then the Lions pulled away never to be challenged. Simmons led Lincoln in scoring with 14 points. Now we gaze into February, which is always an in teresting month. There i s St. Valentine’s day and what not. I also notice birthdays for two popular teens this month, but they come later on. This weather has been terrific, hasn’t it? It seems to have dampened our spirits somewhat, for nothing much happened the past week—but here goes! * » * On Friday night Lopy Finley won a most fine Elgin watch on Amateur Night at Capital the ater. Just recently she won $15 on the same program. Good work, Kiddo! * * * Also on Friday night, Miss Betty Wilson was surprised with a birthday party given by Betty Bowman and Hazel Wilson at the Urban League. As the at ractive, vivacious honoree walked into the lounge she was greeted with the “Happy Birthday” song. What a dazzled and surprised look was on her face. There were so many present that I can’t begin naming all of them, but everyone seemed to be having a swell time. Betty re ceived many beautiful and useful gifts. Looking fine awhile at the party were: Lois Hatcher, Birdie Powell, Peaches Winston and Nate Casteel. An after-party was held at Betty Bowman’s home following the birthday party. Those at tending were Betty Wilson, Rich ard and Phyllis Holcomb, George Alexander, Delores Bowen, Bill Darnell, Hazel Wilson, Albert Bowen, Patsy Hubbard, Willie Ricks, Betty Bowman, Nate Cas teel and Cecil Hatcher. * * * On Saturday night three couples enjoyed a cozy evening together over to Betty Bowman. Try them, they are good. Then let me know how you like them. ^ CARROT CAKK 1 cup sugar—4 eggs—2 cups flour—2 tsp. baking powder—% cup mazola oil— >4 cup shredded carrots—1 tsp. vanilla a;id % cup walnuts. Sift dry ingredients. Mix sugar and eggs. Alternate sifted dry ingredients with oil. Add vanilla and beat well. Fold Bowman and Cecil Hatcher. * * • We girls have been trying to tell you boys that this is a WOM AN’S WORLD. It took four girl to convince Al bert Bowen. Mix well and pour into your fa vorite pie crust. Sprinkle a little nut meg on top and bake, as you would cus tard pie. The folks won’t know the difference and it's delicious. CARROT COOKIES Sift together three times—2 cups flour— 1 tsp. baking powder—^ tsp. sodt—V* tsp. salt—H tsp. cinnamon—V4 tsp. nutmeg. Mix well. Now add to this mixture—2 cups quick oats—1 cup raisins—1 cup nut meats. Mix jvell and then add: 1 cup honey—V4 cup shortening—1 cup grated carrots—2 whole eggs.
