Mrs. Kathryne Favors
received her bachelor's degree in
biology at Fisk University and
her master's degree at the Uni
versity of Nebraska in January,
1948.
Mrs. Favors teaches the sixth
and seventh grades and is the
■wile of a Lincoln pastor.
Mrs. Favors is the editor of
“Dark Merit,” a feature of “The
Voice.” She conducted a course
in Negro History a few summers
ago.
She is a member of Mt. Zion
Baptist Church in Lincoln, the
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, of
which she is treasurer, and a
member of the National Associa
tion of College Women.
She is the librarian of Long
School and a laboratory teacher
in the Omafca school system.
} Mrs. Favors plans to dp further
graduate work toward her doc
torate degree in the near future.
Rev. John Favors
received his Bachelor’s degree
from Bishop College in Marshall,
Texas after having spent two
years at Arizona State Teacher’s
College in Tempe, Arizona, He
received his master’s degree from
the University of Nebraska in
1948 and also attended the Uni
versity of Omaha.
Rev. Mi. Favors is the pastor
of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in
Lincoln, Nebraska and teaches
physical education at Long School
in Omaha.
He is a member of the Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity and an ac
tive participant in the activities
of the New Era State Convention.
Rev. Mr. Favors will begin
work toward his doctorate degree
this summer at the University of
Nebraska.
Wanasebe S. Fletcher
fifth grade teacher, received his
bachelor’s degree at Howard Uni
versity, Master’s degree at the
University of Nebraska, worked
one year on his Ph.D., at Cali
fornia University, and is now
completing his thesis for his Mas
ter’s degree in education and
psychology at the University of
Omaha.
Mr. Fletcher formerly taught
I at Wiley College, Webster Parish
i Training School, Minden, Louis
| iana, and Howard Kennedy Ele
mentary School, Omaha, Nebras
ka. He was an instructor of
: army at Fort Leavenworth, Kan
sas.
Mr. Fletcher has had special
training for three summers at
the Three Arts Conservatory of
Music, Wichita, Kansas studying
music theory, trumpet and violin.
Mr. Fletcher is a member of
the Masonic Lodge, Kappa Alpha
Psi, and the Iroquois Lodge of
the Elks.
Mrs. Mendola Mosley „
attended Prairie View College in
Texas and received her Bache
lor’s degree from Paul Quinn Col
lege in Waco, Texas. She has
done graduate work in the field
of sociology at the Universities of
Kansas and Nebraska.
Mrs. Mosley was librarian and
taught classes in lihrary science
at Paul Quinn College.
She was an interviewer at Fed
eral Low Rent Housing Project,
Waco, Texas.
Mrs. Mosley was a volunteer
hostess U. S. O. clubs in Chey
enne, Wyoming and Omaha, Ne
braska.
She was a caseworker at Fam
ily Service in Omaha and now
teaches the seventh grade at
Long School.
Mrs. Mosley is a member of the
Delta Epsilon Omega chapter of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority of
St. Phillips Episcopal Church, and
of the National Association of
College Women.
Katherine Fletcher
who teaches the fifth and sixth
grades, is a graduate of West
Virginia State College, 1942. She
holds an A. B. degree. Previous
to teaching school, she was a
typist for the war department,
Washington, D. C.
Mrs. Fletcher is the president of
the Gamma Xi chapter of the
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, mem
ber of the National Association of
College Women and of Zion Bap
tist Church.
Mrs. Fletcher plans to work
toward her master’s degree this
summer at Omaha Univeristy.

Long School
Eugene Skinner
attended elementary and high
school in Omaha where he en
joyed some success as an athlete.
He lettered at Tech in basketball
and track and was twice state
champion in the quarter and once
in the hundred yard dash.
Iowa University was the col
lege of his choice where he also
lettered three years in varsity
track and was a member of the
world record breaking sprint re
lay team of 1935.
He became a member of Kappa
Alpha Psi fraternity while at
Iowa and was at one time Pole
march of Gamma Chapter.
After graduation he went to
North Carolina where he taught
French, Spanish and Freshman
English and coached the basket
ball team. He spent two years in
the tarheel state after which he
returned home to Omaha to be
come the first regularly employed
Negro in the City Public schools.
In 1945 he returned to Iowa to
get his Masters Degree and two
years later was appointed to the
principalship of Long School. He
feels that he is very fortunate at
having been appointed to head
this school because he can boast
of the highest trainee faculty in
the city of Omaha. Every teacher
has at least an A. B. degree and
three others have their Masters.
Athletics are still very close to
Skinner’s heart. At present he is
a member of the City Recreation
Championship Soccer team. In the
winter he finds time to play bas
ketball with some of his former
pupils; and in the summer months
he can always be found at the
city’s tennis courts where he is an
ardent tennis enthusiast if not a
proficient player.
At present he is contemplating
a summer teaching position at the
Iowa State Teachers College if
his duties in Omaha will permit.
Mrs. Edmae Swain
is a graduate of Stowe Teachers
College of St. Louis, Missouri with
a B. A. degree in education. She
is a former teacher of the public

Mrs. Swain plans to attend
graduate school this summer to
work toward a master’s degree in
education.
Mrs. Swain, an eighth grade
teacher, is a member of the Na
tional Association of College
Women, member of Zeta Phi
Beta Sorority, an active member
of Zion Baptist Church and leader
of Girl Scout Troop No. 191 of
Omaha, Nebraska.
She is interested in Remedial
Reading having worked in that
field last week at Howard Ken
nedy School.
Anna Louise, her daughter, at
tends Lake Elementary school.
Mrs. Thelma Tucker
received her bachelor’s degree at '
Lincoln University at Jefferson
City, Missouri.
She taught four years at Dumas
i School in Macon, Mo., director of
Nursery School in Omaha, Ne
braska for one year, employed by
the Adjutant General’s Office of
the .War Department, and began
teaching in the Omaha Public
School in 1946, where she at
present teaches the third and
fourth grades.
Mrs. Tucker is a secretary of the ,
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Or
der of the Eastern Star, National
Association of College Women,
and Zion Baptist Church.
Mrs. Esther Woods
received her Bachelor’s degree at i
Le Moyne College in Memphis,
Tennessee. At present, Mrs.
Woods teaches the second grade
at Long School. She taught in
grade school and high school in
Memphis for many years.
Mrs. Woods is now doing
graduate work at Omaha Univer
sity.
She is a member of the Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, National1
Association of College Women,
and St. John AME Church.
Mrs. Jewell Miller
the youngest teacher at Long
School who graduated from col
lege at nineteen, teaches the sec
ond grade. She received her B.S. j
degree in Education from Omaha
University. Last summer, she was
the counsellor at the Dunrovin
Camp in Pinehurst, N. Y.
Mrs. Miller is a member of
the Alpha Kappa Sorority, the
National Association of College
Women, and of Clair Chapel1
Methodist Church.
She plans to do graduate wdrk ,
this summer at the University of
Nebraska in Education.
Mrs. Beatrice Jackson
received her B. A. from the Uni
versity of Omaha after receiving
some normal training at Langston
University, Langston, Oklahoma
and Prairie View College in
Texas.
She taught for ten years in
Oklahoma and was a 4-H club
coach for five years.
Mrs. Jackson is a lovely kinder
garten teacher at Long school.
She is a member of Zion Bap
tist Church, National Association
of College Women, and Zeta Phi
Beta Sorority.
lone Williams Hanger
did work towards her Bachelor’s
Degree at Stowe Teacher’s Col
lege, St. Louis, Missouri, Omaha
University and Creighton Univer
sity in Omaha, Nebraska. At
present, she has twelve hours
toward her Master’s and plans to
do further work towards this de
gree this summer.
Mrs. Hanger has taught in both
St. Louis, Misouri, and Omaha,
Nebraska.
She has held various important
positions in her church, St. Phil
| lips Episcopal Church, for a num
ber of years.
Mrs. Hanger has been a great
community worker as chairman
of the Northside division of the
Community Chest and Red Cross
for a number of years, sponsor of
Catholic girl’s group, sponsor of
j Senior Girl Reserves, Camp Coun
selor of the Girls Scouts, one of
the organizers of the Long School
P.T.A. in which she has held
many offices.
She is a member of the Y. W.
C. A., Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror
ity, the J. M. F. Bridge Club,
Cornhusker Golf Club, Muse
Drama Guild, and First Secretary
of the Nebraska Department of
Classroom Teachers.
Mrs. Hanger has one daughter
who is attending Fisk University.
Mrs. Gladys Ervin
receiving her A.B. degree from
the University of Kansas where
she also did graduate work. She
also attended Colorado State
Teacher’s College, University of
California, and Omaha University.
Mrs. Ervin taught ten years in
the schools of Kansas City, Mis
souri. She was director and ex
ecutive director of the Y.W.C.A.
She was the National Supervisor
of the U.S.O. and Y.W.C.A. She
served on the Mayor’s Committee
on Recreation for the City Plan
ning of Omaha.
At present, Mrs. Ervin teaches
the fourth grade at Long. She is
a member of the Board of Direc
tors of the Omaha Y.W.C.A.,
chairman of the Membership
Committee of the Omaha Associa
tion, member of the Committee of
Management of the Branch and
Branch chairman of finance of
Y.W.C.A. She is the superin
tendent of the Young People’s
Department of St. John’s A.M.E.
and of the Missionary Society of
that church. Mrs. Ervin s a mem
ber of Alpha Kappa Sorority and
of the National Association of
College Women.

Mrs* Thelma Hancock
first grade teacher, received her
bachelor’s degree at the Univer
sity of Omaha. She has done
graduate work at Omaha and
Creighton University.
Also at present, Mrs. Hancock
teaches adult classes at Technical
High School. She has done con
siderable work with nursery
school groups and recreation
work at the Woodson Center.
Mrs. Hancock is a member of
the Zion Baptist Church, Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, National
Association of College Women and
Board of Management of the
Y. W. C. A.
She is the mother of two lovely
children—Nadine, a freshman at
Omaha University and Thelma,
an eighth grade student at How
ard Kennedy School.
