    Taliaferro Stars
With George (the Great) Talia
ferro leading the touchdown pa
rade with a “double” for Indiana,
as they walloped Pitt, Paul Pat
terson of Illinois and Bob Mann
of Michigan with “singles” and
Emlen Tunnell still going great
at Iowa, sepia stars sparkled
brightly again on the major col
lege football fronts.
One Pittsburgh writer said that
Taliaferro was a “one-man” show.
“He put on a one-man display of
passing and running that was
slightly out of this world. Talia
ferro doesn’t have to bow to any
of them,” the daily scribe de
clared.
At Columbus it was Tunnell’s
wide sweeps that kept Iowa in the
game and helped them tie Ohio
State, 13-13. Banks, a guard also
saw service for the Hawkeyes. .
Groomes also scored a touch
down for Indiana against Pitt.
For Michigan, terminal Bob
Bann raced 49 yards, the longest
run of the day, to score.
Gene Derricotte also went into
action as mighty Michigan beat
Northwestern, 49-21.
Paul Patterson was one of the
backs who helped Illinois rout
Minnesota, 40-13, with Glen Pul
lers, a back also getting into the
game for the Illini.
The Game of the Week: Vir
ginia State’s unbeaten Trojans
and Hampton’s unbeaten Pirates.
Hampton will leave the game on
the short end of a high scoring
count.

Gospel Singers Here

PROF. AND MRS. TINDLEY
Professor and Mrs. Tindley
are recognized by many authori
ties as the greatest gospel singers
in America today. They are god
ly, spirit-filled Christians whose
ministry in song has blessed
thousands.
Son of the late Dr. Charles A.
Tindley, the world renowned
Methodist pastor and song writ
er, Professor Tindley is a well
trained worker. He is a graduate
of Temple University and has
studied voice under the cele
brated Eugene D’Avengnue. He
is a tenor. Mrs. Hazel P. Tindley,
a coloratura soprano, is a gradu
ate of the Pittsburgh Musical In
stitute of the University of Pitts
burgh.
But more than family or train
ing, they radiate sound Christian
qualities and sincerity. Professor
Tindley interprets his father’s
beloved hymns as only he can
do and thrills an audience with
his dramatic presentation. The
Tindleys have had the pleasure
of serving with some of the out
standing men in the field of
evangelism, including Dr. Robert
G. Lee, Dr. Bob Jones, Sr., Dr.
H. A. Ironside, Dr. Oswald J.
Smith, and others.
president of the Brooklyn Dodg

Dark Merit
Py Kathryne Favors
The editor ot “Dark Merit”
would like to take this opportunity
to congratulate “The Voice” on
its first anniversary. I feel that
“The Voice” is one of the greatest
things that has happened to the
city of Lincoln for a long time.
From many points of view the city
of Lincoln is forgetting its com
placency and is really developing
into a cosmopolitan city.
Again this week, I wish for you
to enjoy with me some poems
written by Negroes.
IT'S ALL THROIGH LIFE.
A day of joy, a week of pain.
A sunny day, & week of rain;
A day of peace, a year of strife:
But cling to Him, it’s all through life.
An hour of joy, a day of fears.
An hour of smiles, a day of tears:
An hour of gain, a day of strife.
Press on, press on, it’s all through life.
—Waverley Turner Carmichael
TO AMERICA.
How would you have us—as we are
Or sinking ’neath the load we bear?
Our eyes fixed forward on a star?
Or gazing empty at despair?
Rising or falling? Men or things?
w'iih dragging pace, or footsteps fleet?
Strong, willing sinews In your wings?
Or tightening chains about your feet?
—James Weldon Johnson
THE MULATTO TO HIS CRITICS.
Ashamed of my race?
And of what race am I?
1 am many in one.
Through my veins there flows the blood
Of Red Man, Black Man. Briton. Celt and
Scot.
In warring clash and tumultous riot.
I welcome all.
But love the blood of a kindly race
That swarths my skin, crinkles my hair.
And puts sweet music into my soul.
—Joseph S. Cotter. Jr.
I, TOO, SING AMERICA
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh.
And eat well.
And grow strong.
Tomorrow
I’ll sit at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me.
"Eat In the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides.
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
I, too, sing America.
—Langston Hughes
