I Believe --
A Series of Sermons Based on the
Apostles’ Creed.
— Introduction —
Although the Church of God,
like many other church groups,
does not use a formal creed such
as the Apostles’ Creed, there is
much food for thought and spiri
tual growth in this formal state
ment. Whether we put it in a
set form or not, all Christians
have a creed, that is, a collection
of beliefs about the Bible which
we regard as our only creed.
“Every religion, however crude
or primitive, has enshrined a
creed, and in some fashion has
given voice to a confession of the
j faith by which it lived.” It may
be addressed, orally or in writing,
to a few persons in sympathy
or out of sympathy with it, or to
a congregation, or to a church,
or to the world. If short, com
prehensive, and dignified enough
for frequent use in public wor
ship, especially if rhythmically
expressed in language of the first
person, - “I believe” or “We
believe,” it becomes a creed.”

A History of Creeds & Confes
sions of Faith
PP 4, 5
Let us read the Apostles’ Creed.
I believe in God the Father
Almighty, * Maker of heaven and
earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only
Son our Lord:
Who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin
Mary: Suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, dead, ahd
buried: He descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from
the dead: He ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty
From thence He shall come to
judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost:
The Holy Catholic Church; The
Communion of Saints: The
Resurrection of the body: and
the Life everlasting. Amen.

Text- “Sirs, be of Good Cheer:
for I believe God.” Acts 27:25]
The first clause of the Apostles’
Creed states that: ‘‘I believe in
God the Father Almighty, Maker
of heaven and earth.” Whether
we believe in written creeds orj
not, this statement comes in its
proper place. All faith must
begin with God . Men of higher1
learning and criticism, so-called,
have expressed ther doubts about
God and divine power and revel
ation, but the Christian can safe
ly speak to his fellow men and
say as Paul did: “Sirs, be of
good cheer: for I believe God.”
The Psalmist quite aptly classi
fied modern skeptics when he
said that, “The fool hath said in
his heart, ‘There is no God.’ ”
Psalms 44:1
All Christian experience de
I pends upon fcrith in God for “with
out faith it is impossible to please
him: for he that cometh to God
must believe that He is, and that
He is a rewarder of them that will
diligently seek Him.” Heb. 11:6.
It is absurd to profess to believe
in the rewards of one whose ex
istence we doubt or openly deny.
When we are startled by the rapid
changes of our time or when we
are tempted to doubt or question
God’s power, we do well to obey
our Lord’s command: “Have laith
in God.” When we are challanged
