She will remain for a week. Miss Marjorie Watts of Fre mont, Nebraska, organizer for the W.C.T.U. was in the city on Wednesday. * * * * Persons reported ill during the past week were, Mrs. Marie Copeland and little Linda Springs, Mr. John Irving, Mrs Edward G. Craft and Mr. Henry Harris are reported somewhat improved. * * * • Word was received here of the sudden passing of Charlie Kane. He was stricken while in line of duty as a Burlington employee. Mr. Kane will be remembered as singing with Quinn Chapel Choir while having his headquarters Kin the city several years ago. * * * * Howard Bean, son of Mrs. Maud Johnson, is spending some |! time home. He is in the U. S. ,V. The Wisdom of ihe Young Every day, six-year-old Tommy brought home breathless accounts of the prowess of his new friend, Joe, with wide-eyed admiration, Tommy would report to his mother that Joe was the smartest boy in the first grade, Joe could make the biggest bubbles with bubble gum, Joe had taught the other kids how to make paper aeroplanes. Then, one day, over a bridge table, another mother asked, “did you know that your son’s closest fi’iend at school is a Negro boy?” That evening, while Tommy was again regaling his mother with the wonders of Joe, she said, “but Tommy, you never told me that Joe was colored.” “Colored?” the child asked “what’s colored?” “Why, his skin is darker than yours, isn’t it?” Tommy paused thought fully to ponder the question, then he answered, “I don’t know, but I’ll look tomorrow.” . n - MIAMI OF OHIO BARS BIAS Oxford, Ohio (NNPA) -Miami University of Ohio last Wednes day went on record as opposing and racial discrimination in ath letic competition in which its students participate. The senate of the university, by a vote of 83 to 52, decided the issue after aroused students had petitioned the school because a colored member of the football team was not taken to Miami, Florida last fall to compete in a game against the University of Miami at Miami.
