*--* The Sporis Front With Smoky By Howard “Smoky” Molden Jackie His Type of Player “He’s a swell ball player,” the “Lip” says. “I saw him at least three times last season. He’s my type of ball player. Jackie can hit, run and field. What more can a manager ask of a player? Geez’ the guy was sensational last season, and a lot of people still are dubious about his ability. Durocher flicks off the stylish sports jacket he is wearing, looks out of the window and sees noth ing but the deep, blue sea surg ing beyond the distant horizon. Had he ever seen Roy Campanella catch? ■ “No, I’ve never seen him,” Dur A>cher says. “But I’ve heard a lot Tabout him. They say he is a real ’’prospect. I understand he has a *7 rifle arm and can really hit a ball. I’ll get a chance to see him when my club plays Montreal in Ha vana. All the reports I’ve re ceived about him have been good.” Durocher hadn’t heard much about Roy Partlow, the lefthand pitcher, or Donald Newcombe, a big righthander who hurled for Nashua last year. They are both expected to be with Montreal this season. It was obvious, however, that he was interested in them. But, above all, he was definitely interested in Jackie Robinson. He #saw the flashy Negro second base man play in some exhibition games last October out on the West Coast and apparently was impressed. W Champion Joe Louis seemed to be the man around the South American territory for awhile. He set a new all time attendance record when he appeared in an exhibition bout with Arturo Go doy. Over 30,000 fans were on hand to cheer and welcome Joe. A little fellow who will prob ably be no more on the lips of fight fans for fistic achievement will be Beau Jack, who because of a severe leg injury may have #to quit the ring. Baseball once again swing back to the campus of Howard Uni. for the first time in 19 years. 75 candidates reported to Coach Thomas F. Johnson.
