We see Jesus in the manger.
We adore Him; we worship Him;
we glorify Him. We stand im
pressed before such love—a love
stronger than death—a love so
strong that it did die that we
might live. We thank thee for
the sweetness of human love, but
how could we ever have dared to
think that such love was in the
heart of God for us! We look
on nature and see Thy beauty
and Thy majesty but we are
afraid, for we have sinned. And
then we learn that Thou hast
sent Thy Son, to be bone of our
bone, flesh of our flesh; and be
fore such inconceivable love we
can only worship and adore. We
are so weary of our failure and
our slow growth toward Thee,
cleanse us deeply from sin,
strengthen our moral purposes.

Tragedies During Slavery
It has often been said that one
of the worst crimes ever commit
ted by the white man of the
United States is that of slavery.
Slavery is casually mentioned in
our textbooks. The true and
hard facts about slavery should
be brought out in a course in Ne
gro History which should be in
every high school curriculum. In
a book, The Suppressed Book
about Slavery, which may be
found at Memorial Library Ne
braska University published in
1864, the author apparently a
white man, told of a few of the
horrors of slavery that might
cause us to weep. Following are
some examples of the horrors he
mentioned in his book:
“There was a large amount of
property sold yesterday which we
cannot enumerate in full. Mr. A.
R. Phillips sold an immense num
ber of men, women and children.”
“Only think of a woman, en
tirely naked, surrounded by a
profane vulgar crowd, while she
writhes under the Lash, or is of
fered for purposes of prostitution,
to the highest bidder.”
“A dead slave was sold at $499”
“Lillburn Lewis (nephew of
Thomas Jefferson, the penman of
the Declaration of Independence)
of Livingston County, Kentucky,
was the owner of about fifty
slaves, whom he drove constant
ly, fed sparingly, and lashed se
verely. The consequence was,
that some of them were in the
habit of running away. This gave
Lewis great anxieties until he
found them, or until they had
starved out and returned. A boy
named George, about seventeen
years of age, who, having just
returned, was sent to a spring for
water, and let a pitcher fall,
breaking it. This was the occasion
it was night. Lewis collected all
the slaves into an outhouse, and
ordered a rousing fire to be made.
When the door was secured, that
none might escape, either through
fear or sympathy, Lewis opened
the design of the meeting, name
ly, that they might be effectually
taught to stay at home and obey
his orders. All things now being
in train, he called George, who
approached his “Master” with the
most unreserved submission. He
