The Voice in the
Wilderness
by Rev. Trago T. McWilliams, Sr.
Way back yonder in the be
ginning a voice was heard in the
“cool of the day” it struck terror
into the hearts of sinners. Later
it was full of majesty and sound
ed like a noise of “many waters,”
and then one bright day it came
out of a cloud and said “this is
my beloved Son in whom I am
well pleased, hear ye Him. And
then a voice in the wilderness
crieth out, “Prepare ye the way
of the Lord, make straight in the
desert a highway for our uoa.
The Voice is ever crying out
trying to lead men to a more a
bundant life, that Voice was en
deavoring to help men on this
earth when it said “judge not
that ye be not judged.” And
friends what is judgment except
prejudice? For in the final anal
ysis it is previous and unfavor
able bias, prejudgment without
due examination.
If a people judge another peo
ple without truly knowing that
people it is positively detrement
al to both. It is a denial of the
Fatherhood of God and the Bro
therhood of man. Surely that
wilderness Voice, crying out a
gainst intolerance is being heard
and for that we do thank God.
This week in convocation at the
University of Nebraska we heard
the eulogy of our own Doctor
Carver. In Savannah Georgia
colored and white Baptists are
meeting together. Radio pro
grams thruout the nation and a
broad are now spreading the gos
pel of tolerahce. Truly we are
seeing a new day.

Dear Rev. Shakespeare:
I was much interested in read
ing the Voice, and compliment
you on such a fine publication.
Let me say, also, that our colored
students at Whittier Junior High
School are an asset to the student
body and a credit to their parents.
They show every evidence of
home guidance and training
which is particularly commend
able. We would welcome any
of the parents at school should
they care to visit.
- Respectfully,

Letter to the Editor
A black face
Often when I was a child, the
fact that I was a Negro made me
feel ashamed. In school, I was
never taught the accomplish
ments of my race. I picked up a
few now and then from my par
ents, but often, I thought my
brown face just wasn’t as good
as some others. After I got out
of school, I began to read many
books about my race to find out
what we had accomplished. I
was astonished. Never had I real
ized that the African people
(Egyptians) were called the only
ancient teachers, the fathers of
embalming, the fathers of medi
cine, and etc. Never had I real
ized of the other wonderful ac
complishments. I soon loved to
spend evenings at home learning
about a great people. I now have
eleven books written exclusively
about my race. I shall add others.
A library of Negro books is price
less.
When I walk down the street
now, I hold my head up, proud
of the fact that my skin is dark
and my hair is krinkled because
I know that within my brain, I,
too, can possess knowledge, and
that my soul can be as clean as
that of an Anglo-Saxon.

Dear Brother in Christ Jesus:
I was elated to learn that your
race had an official publication.
I was still more elated to learn
that you and your fine wife were
the owners and publishers.
The noble purpose to which
your publication is dedicated,
will, I am convinced, bear much
fruit and benefit to your race—
Mrs. Martha Marley
and mine! We have faith in the
ultimate triumph of right. The
The forces of evil cannot long
endure, and, “He that keepeth
Israel shall neither slumber nor
sleep.”
That your aims and efforts in
this noble endeavor shall reach
the noontide glory of your dreams
is the sincere wish of one who
also has bent low enough to feel
the suffering needs of others, and
having risen desires to assuage
the grief and heal the wounds of
every struggling heart.
