* Teen Age Chatter Reporter, Dotty Greene Thought of the Week He that may hinder mischief yet permits it, is an accessory. ^ E. A. Freeman » Halloween is over, but it was fun while it lasted. Among the many parties there was one given by Mattie Sue Nevels and Charles Goosley. The tables were dec orated with orange and black napkins with jack-o-lanterns etc. Red baloons were hanging around the room. The evening was spent playing games. The guests ate by candle light, refreshments were ice cream, cake, cider, pea nuts, and candy. Everyone had a lot of fun. As the story goes, One day last week a certain F. P. almost broke ^up the Latin class in room 205 when she saw Cathedral football boys practicing on Lincoln High’s north field. Many people wonder why it is that the Negro thrived and is still thriving in centers of modern civilization. In order that we might know why the Negro has fused so easily into the American Civilization, we must learn more about Africa. Some people won der if the culture of the African was anything like American cul ture, or if the Negro is unusually initiative and easy to become fused with other cultures. When we think of Africa, we often think of wild cannibals eating other African, but History says that the African is the father of civilization. Were we to visit Africa today, we would be utterly amazed at the sights we would see. We would see modern buildings in some of the smaller cities and the largest metropolises as Tunis, Algiers, Cairo and . Alexandria. Many of the buildings would be more modern than those we see in Lincoln. We’d see people of all races, with a variation of features and colors, walking up and down the streets. We’d find in the various parts, many con trasts and extremes. An African missionary mentioned to me a few weeks ago that in all the years she’s lived in Africa, she has. never seen a cannibal as Ameri cans often thing of Africans. In the school where, I teach, we have the loveliest little Afri can girl who is much like our girls in many respects. In North America, we are di vided into states, and in some parts of Africa, the state has reached quite an advanced stage when we speak of Africa, we must always have in mind, that we are speaking of a large place with an estimated population of more than 170,000,000 people. Many writers have stressed that the king ruled in all parts of Africa with absolute authority but this is not true for he does not rule with absolute sway in all parts. The king is either chos sen by a council of state, or he receives his high position by heredity. “He is commander-in chief of the forces of the state and he is arbuter of all disputes arising among the provences of his jurisdiction. But the local governments of his providence seldom suffer from interference on the part of the king. His prob lem is rather that of maintaining the peace.” f’ C.C. Woodson. The Negro in our History, p. 23 My Definition of an American Negro An American Negro is a person in whose veins flow the blood of all races. As America is the melt ing pot of the Nation, so the Negro is the melting pot of America. The Negro is the result of the blending of the races with the Negro as the dominating factor.
