Er war auf diesem gefahrvollen, von taufend Schlingen und Fallen befäien Felde der Börfenfpeisiatiau nicht zu Haufe. ja in tiefster Seele empfand er einen Daß gegen das BarfenfpieL Renle Werte, die ver mochte er zu erkennen. allein Hun derttausende einfach auf den großen SWH der Börse hinzufchleudern und dann zu warten, wie die Karten fielen, oder die Kniffe ivaghaifiget Speinlanien die Preise auf- und nie der-schaben: diefe Jongleurfiiicke gin gen ihm wider die Natur. Man konnte Eifenhnhnen bauen oder Schiffe, Städte gründen,-eleitkischc Anlagen ins Leben rufen — gur« dann gewann das ganze Land, je ter wurde reicher —- aber bei dein BörfenspieL da war der Gewinn des einen immer der Verzan der Ruin dek- nnderen. Ganze Industrien wurden brachgeiegt. Auch aus den Baum wolldistritien des Südens tiefen gün stigere Nachrichten ein, die ersten Be richte über den. von den Finten ange richteten Schaden seien start übertrie ben. hieß es; große Posic.1 Baums» nsoile sollten nach New Orieans un terwegs sem. Und all dieser Hiobsposten zum Trog hatte Dobe den Preis aus siebzehn hinausgeschoben. Er dachte lauen noch. Ohne wei tere Ueberlegung eilte er zu seinem Matler und erteilte ihrn den Austrag, zu vertausen. Nur daß dies Glückseinpsinden nicht ungetrübt blieb —- — etwas Anderes, Aufftachelndes, Beunruhi gendes zerrte sich ans Licht — das Gewissen. Wie von einer Tarantel gestochen, suhr Dohbs in die Höhe· «Jch atzeptiere die Antwort nicht — das ist Selbstcnord." Hubbarvs Faust schlug ein paar inal wie in einer tonvulsivischen Be wegung aus den Tisch. »Dobbs, ich bin zu Ende, ich sann nicht weiter,« lmn es tonle. .Gegen meine innerste Uebetzeugung bin ich in diese ganze unselige Sache hinein gegangen, die ich nicht verstehe und nicht beherrsche.
