Bei der Hcllhö rialeit des ganz aus-·- Holz gebauteii Hauses konnte er sogar das Knirschen von Ohrfeigen deutlich vernehmen. Als er vor seine Zimmerthiir eilte, sal) er, wie der Koch seine Frau mißbandeite nnd ihr die schlimmsten portugiesischen Schimpiwörter an den Kopf warf. Brown trennte die Streitenden, nnd der Koch entschuldigte seine Wutb mit einer Erzählung, wie er soeben due-PS Schlüsselloch gesehen habe, wie Mr. Smith seine Frau, die ihm Wasser zum Rasircn brachte, geküßt liabex wie könnte er eine Frau, die sich das gefal len ließ, anders behandeln! Endlich schaffte Brown Ruhe. Ter Koch schlos fick in seine Kammer ein, und die Frau schlnchzke in der Küche weiter iiber die Echtechtigteit dieser Welt. Ader zwei Stunden spater gab es nur lauteren Zank und Streit in Smiti, s Zimmer. Es ging englisch strd portugiesifch durch einander; denn der wüthende Koch iiberstbiihte offen bar seines Herrn Kenntniß von dieser schönen Sprache.
