LITCHFIELD NEWS. Too late for last week. Charlie Farnsworth is on the sick list this week. Alf Flint made a business trip to Ravenna on Tuesday. Whew! Its twenty degrees below this Wednesday morning. George Slote went down to Ravenna to cry a sale on Tuesday. Thomas Spelts made a business trip to Mason City Monday on 39. Ross Hager made a business trip to Broken Bow Monday on No. 39. Our hog and grain buyer shipped a load of hogs to Omaha Sunday. Joe Gubson, the horse buyer, shipped a car of horses Sunday. The Howard brothers shipped an other load of hogs to Omaha on Tues day. E. L. Harshfield loaded on a car of household and farm goods for Arapa hoe. John Duncan accompanied a car load of cattle to the South Omaha market on Sunday. Albert Dickenson is on the sick list. We miss his familiar figure on the streets. He is improving. John Minshull’s addition to his fami ly is a girl, not a boy as reported last week. My mistake, John, and. your treat. There are quite a number of chil dren and older people down with the la grippe. To mention them all would make a long list. Art Marsh has the contract for putt * lng up the town ice this year. He commenced on C. A. Potter's and Dr. Rydberg's Monday. George Slote, our auctioneer, will hold another one of his combination sales Saturday the 15th. at his sale yard. Bring in your stuff. Mrs. H. E. Valentine, a younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chamber lain, whom we all know, is also spend ing the holidays with her parents. The Morris Stock company played all last week at the Plaza opera house. 1 am sorry that they were not better patronized. 1 understand they dis banded here and went their several different ways. Mrs. Peters, a daughter of Thomas Chamberlain, left for her home at Warrinsburg, Mo., on No. 44 last Fri day night. She has been spending the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Cham berlain whom she had not seen for ten years. The township board of Harrison township met on Tuesday the 4th, and adjourned till the 5th and made settle ment with Henry Schultz and William Beck, our road overseers, and audited the township accounts which were found in good shape. Herb Me Cosh returned to his home at Oasis, Utah, on Saturday morning. 1 understand he will return to look after the farm as soon as he can dis pose of his interests in Utah. His sis ter, Mrs. Hackney, returned; home to their ranch in Montana on Monday morning. Kanute Ladegard had the mis fortune to lose his house and all Its contents early Sunday morning by fire. The fire is supposed to have started from the stove. Kanute had gone to Mason on 39 and says that when he and Ed Harper left the house there was hardly any fire in the stove The fire was discovered by Ernest Garnett and Joe Cording about 2:15 a. m. They had been taking a lunch after the dance. But for that the fire might have been a more serious one. Both A. D. Nordlng's and Dr. Ryd berg’s houses were adjoining and in a direct line with the wind. Joe and Ernest gave the alarm and pulled the hose cart up themselves, before the other fire boys arrived and although the blaze was coming out through the roof they, under our fire chief, Geo. Slote, confined the fire to the house, saving both the other houses . Say, is it not about time our village did something to recognize the work of our fire boys? They have done good work, saved lots of property, and have not only spoiled clothes, but have put money into this outfit. Get busy. WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP. Walter Mahowski visited at Archie Purvine's Saturday. C. C. Darrow visited at J. W. Dar row'a place Sunday. Oscar Jewell was marketing wheat in Arcadia Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Jewell visited at Malm’s place Friday. G. W. Anderson hauled a load of hay to Arcadia Monday. J. H. Welty was a Loup City visitor a couple of days last week. Mr. and Mrs. Archie Purvine visited *t G. W. Anderson’s place last Sunday. Hans Pederson and Axel Hendrick son visited at G. W. Anderson’s place Wednesday. Bessie. Mary and Wash Peters and John Auglund, visited at Archie Pur vine’s Saturday. " The flrst blizzard of the season struck this section Tuesday. Not a great amount of snow fell but the ther mometer fell to about 20 below zero. Hasselflad, the Swedish, and Baptist Sunday school missionary, ar rived Friday, with the intention of holding protracted meetings in the Balsora neighborhood. Richard Nordstrom returned one day last week from Albion/ Wyo where he went to spend the holidays and visit with his brother, Oscar Nord strom, who resides near that place. DEER CREEK NUGGETS Henry Peters has returned to his work at John \Veiss’. Edward Bydalek is working for Mrs. John Peters at present B. H. and A. E. Lorenz shipped a car of porkers to Omaha last week. Harry and Lena Lemberg went to Farwell Sunday to visit with their parents. A few from here attended the Goc Kosmicki wedding on Oak creek last Tuesday. A. E. Lorens is on the sick list, hav ing a cold in his throat and being un gble to .eat. Jos. -Lubash helped Prank Bonczy nskl haul his porkers to the Ashton market Monday. Ignatz Haremza was a passenger to Loup City Monday, where he tran sacted some business matters. A big snow storm arrived from the north last week and it made a fine winter blanket for the fall wheat. Quite a few pupils of school Dist. No. 12 were absent from their studies, which was due to the cold weather. Andrew and Frank Bonczynski and Carsten Bros, helped A. E. Lorenz haul hogs to the car which he recent ly shipped to Omaha. Bob Weczorek is busy hustling after subscribers for the Rural Weekly. He is interested in the contest, and this is the last week. We all wish him success. Mrs. Bennet Maschka and daughter Leona have gone to Omaha to visit with relatives, and Ben is taking the bachelor method of living. Wonder how he likes it? Mrs. Andrew Smidera and son, Stanley made another trip to St. Paul, where Stanley is taking treatment for his right knee, which was badly sprained. He is still unable to use the injured member. Tony Weczorek will hold a public sale on the Mike Weczorek farm six miles south and one mile west of Ash ton on Thursday, January 20. Cattle, horses and farm machinery. A. A. Grey, Auct., Jos. No. 12 received certificates for attending twenty days, being neither absent nor tardy: Tony Bonczynski, Rosie Bon czynski, Charlie Kritski, Leo Kritski, Josie Kritski, Clara Lubash, Stanley Lubash, Paul Maciejewski, Alexander Maciejewski and Philip Kritski. Last week an article was published in the Deer Creek news which was strenuously objected to by L. F. Lu bash and others. It referred to an article, about the leap year dance. We wish to inform these parties and others that no offense was intended and that if the publisher of The Northwestern, or the correspondent, had any idea that the wording of the article would cause dissatisfaction, it would not have been printed. The Northwestern does not desire the ill will of its readers. AUSTIN NEWS. The Austin bridge is now ready for traffic. P. G. Paige has been loading a car with baled hay. Dan Carpenter was a Loup City visitor Saturday. John Gregg has nearly recovered from his recent illness. Alice Wilding has been on the sick list for the past two weeks. A crowd of Austin young people spent Saturday evening skating on the river. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Roberts have been visiting the past week with John Gregg. Miss Rhea Rentfow is slowly re covering from a severe attack of the la grippe. Harry Gregg had the misfortune to injure his side, while unloading hogs several days ago. The ninth grade of the Austin school were given their first semester ex amination in Algebra last week. Nearly half of the school year has passed and the grades show that the pupils have been doing excellent work. Mrs. Carnes returned to her home at Creston, Iowa, after spending sever al weeks with her sister, Mrs. J. H McCall. Sidney and Floyd Anthus of Clay Center, Nebraska, have been visiting their sister, Mrs. Hughes since the holidays. V. T. Wescott, Jess Fletcher, Wini fred Hughes and William Smalley of the west side were seen in our burg last Saturday. Stewart McFadden left last Satur day for Cherryvale, Kansas, being called there by the serious illness of his aged mother. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Curtis returned to their home at Waverly, Nebr. last week, after making a short visit with the former’s sister, Mrs. Hartwell. Dan McDonald, county supervisor, representing Loup City township, spent several days last week attend ing to business at the county seat. Mesdames Ogle and Fletcher visited the Austin school last Friday. All patrons are requested to visit, as it increases the interest of the pupils. There has been a coal famine in Austin during the extreme cold cold weather. Several people have been compelled to go to Loup City for their coal. Everyone has a cordial invitation to the oyster supper to be given at the Austin church Friday evening. Don’t forget to send your parcel to be sold at the “Parcel Post” sale. Mr. Couton and family have re covered from the lagrippe. This has been quite an epidemic this year in Austin, as nearly every family has had a siege of the sickness. Our former store keeper, Alonzo Daddow, is displaying a new wagon. He has gone back to farm life, and, being an experienced driver, had a runaway last week. The result, how ever, was not a serious one. Willie Talbot and Wilbur Daddow entertained their Sunday school class at their home last Friday evening. The evening was spent in pulling taffy and playing games. A dainty luncheon was served, and every mem ber of the class enjoyed themselves very much. CLEAR CREEK NEWS. Walter Shetler is sawing ice. Little Gloria Shettler has tonsolitis. Wes and Albert Heappy are putting up ice. George John and Frank Kuhn are putting up ice. G. A. Richmond is hauling corn from Litchfield. J. A. Bowser’s family are all down with the grippe. George Gray sold seven head of heifers Monday. Dorr Spencer is helping O. A. Clark with his ice crop. Iont Duncan shipped a car of cattle to Omaha Monday. Ralph Allison bought a team of horses from Geo. Gray. Elwin Beck is absent from school on account of the grippe. Clyde and Ray Kuhn have been pretty sick with the grippe. Ross Hager is sawing ice, prepara tory to filling the ice house. Kenneth and Hazel Mead are hav ing a tussle with the grippe. F. T. Richmond came back from Loup City Thursday evening. Mrs. Mary Price visited with Mrs. Lulu Burtner in Litchfield the last of the week. A. D. Jones shipped one of his fine thoroughbred hogs to Sheiton, Nebr. Thursday. Carl Vian came back from Colorado and is visiting with friends on Clear creek this week. There were a good many absent from school in Dist. No. 25 Tuesday and Wednesday. There was a charivari party Mon day evening at Weber's. The boys were well treated. The Ladies’ association of the U. B. church met with Mrs. Frank Boroff Thursday afternoon. William Weber and his friend from Iowa made a business trip to the county seat Tuesday. Geo. Wolf went to Ulysses. Nebr., Sunday morning to see his aged mother, who is very ill. Sam Eastabrook and Martin Burt ner are laying in a supply of ice for making ice cream next summer. Fred Whitman drove down ~from Arcadia and brought his sister, Sadie Shetler home, returning Tuesday. Geo. Bent will hold a public sale Thursday on the Bent farm one and one-lialf miles northeast of Hazard. Miss Florence Stewart did not teach school at Lone Elm Tuesday. There were no scholars, on account of the cold weather. Mrs. Eastabrook, Miss Gasteyer, Miss Burtner and Mrs.' Price braved the cold weather and went to Litch field to do shopping Saturday. Paul Hickman, Freddie Richmond and Fred Brookshire attended the meeting of the Brotherhood, at the Christian church Monday evening. Wedding bells were ringing at the home of John Webber Saturday, when his oldest daughter, Bertha was marr ied to Mr. Kozel, from Iowa. They will go to Iowa to make their future home. ASHTON NEWS. A. B. Outhouse was here Friday on business. Mike Galczenski visited at Loup City Sunday. Mat Ignowski was down from Loup City Monday. County surveyor Corning attended to business here Monday. Cash Tapolski, of Schaupps was here on business Saturday. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Wardyn, on Tuesday night, a daughter. Frank Jezewski spent Sunday in Loup City returning Monday morning. Albert Kartas went to Farwell Mon day morning, returning in the even ing. Mrs. J. L. Davy of near Schaupps, was here Friday shopping and visit ing. P. O. Lewandowski from north of Schaupps was here on business Mon day. Miss Verna Lukasczewski visited Miss Victoria Tapolski at Schaupps Sunday. Ike Kieth of Loup City, with the Standard Oil company, was here on Friday. Mrs. Packard of Johnston, Nebr., is at present visiting her sister, Mrs. C. L. Wilson. Fred Reins, who has been visiting at Avoca, Nebr., returned home Satur day evening. J. R. Gardiner was called to Brew ster on account of the serious illness of his father. Rev. B. Radka returned from Oma ha last Friday where he had been for the past week. Ernest Mashka went to Omaha Fri day on business and also to visit rela tives and friends. Putting up ice is the order of the day at present. The ice being from 12 to 14 inches thick. Mrs. Ed. Jamrog was a passenger for Omaha Monday morning where she will visit for a week. Emil Ojendyk went to Farwell on the passenger Monday morning, re turning the same evening. Peter Zochol reutrned from the South Omaha markets, he having shipped a car of hogs there. Mrs. Nitkowski was a passenger for Loup City Wednesday evening, where she visited relatives. Bruno Lorchick and Walter Woit lewicz, from north of Schaupps, were in Ashton Monday on business. Mrs. Gardiner, who is spending the winter in Dannebrog, spent several days last week with Mr. Gardiner. Professor and Mrs. McDaniel are the proud parents of a baby boy, who ar rived at their home Tuesday night. One of Mr. and Mrs. Derscowski’s children is very ill at the present time suffering from a severe attack of the grippe. Peter Haremza spent several days visiting here last week. He returned to his home in Loup City Monday evening. Miss Frances Coming returned to school work Monday morning after spending Sunday with home folks at Loup City. Mrs. Frank Swontek, of Vice, Ok lahoma, who is visiting Mrs. Ignatz Maiefski, has been quite sick for the past few days. Quite a crowd of the younger set I spent Sunday evening with Miss Nellie Jamrog at a card party. All present report a splendid time. Supervisor Vincent Rewolinski, re turned Saturday morning from Loup City where he had been for several days at a meeting with the rest of the county dads. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. John Ignowski on Monday, a 11-pound boy. Mother and son are doing fine and John— well, he’s stepping high and setting | ’em up on his first sou. The funeral of the infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Frank LeWandowski took place on Friday the 14th. The little one was only about three days old. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family. A big crpwd of friends gathered at the hospitable home of Mr. and Mis. Charles Jamrog, Sunday, and spent the evening at cards and an all around jolly good time. A bountiful supper was served at 6 o’clock. All present enjoyed themselves and spoke very highly of Mr. and Mrs. Jamrog as ex cellent entertainers. On Tuesday occurred the wedding of Mr. Ignatz Goc and Miss Barbara Kominsik at St. Francis' church. Rev. Radka officiating. After the wedding ceremony a big wedding banquet was held at the home of the bride’s par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kominski. All of their friends aud relatives were present. We wish the young couple all kinds of luck, happiness and pros perity. DAVIS CREEK. Marie Hassel was in Ashton Mon j day. Walter Paul was at John Palenaski's last week. John Palenaski finished picking his corn last week. Lester Hassel visited with Dold Manchestei Sunday. Jess Barnett has been visiting in Ord since last Friday. John Lewandowski hauled a load of hogs to Ashton Monday. John Garvel is on the sick list, but is some better at this writing. John Palenaski helped Walter Palu butcher, Friday of last week. The Palu boyd were seen {lauling hay the latter part of the week. Albert Sawankenus went to help Frank Henderson pick corn, Monday. John Garvel visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. O. Lewandowski Sun day. Tony Zaruba was in North Loup Wednesday with another load of wheat. Frank Henderson and Mike Palu shipped several cars of hogs to Oma ha Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Hassel and daughter, Marie, visited with Mr. and Mrs. John Palenaski Sunday. Bills are out announcing the John Pruss sale for January 25. John ex pects to move away from here. The little son of N. Halverson is suffering from whooping cough at the home of his uncle, C. F. Brown. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Palu and fam ily visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Spotanski last Sunday. Tony Zaruba and John Orent took supper with Frank Manchester’s Mon day evening, and spent the evening at cards. Frank and Tony Spotanski came down from Loup City Saturday to spend Sunday at the home of their brother, Lawrence Spotanski. The dance at Frank Trump's was well attended and a real n*ee time was had by those who were there, but it was a good night Saturday. The cold weather put Jess Manches ter back front shipping his hogs to Omaha last week, so he expects to ship his car of hogs this week. Mrs. Ray Gourley returned home Tuesday, January 11, from Overton, Nebr., where she has been visiting home folks during the holidays. The coldest day of the season was Wednesday morning, the mercury fall ing to 24 below zero, and Thursday morning 28 below. That is getting pretty cold. It is rumored that P. O. Lewandow ski of near Schauups, has rented his farm to Frank Wojtalewscz and will have a sale later on and move to Loup City. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Manchester is on the sick list at this writing. We hope the little fellow will soon be well again. He has some throat trouble. Frank Manchester and John Palen aski were in Ashton Friday. Tony Oren also went and brought home his little boys, who are going to school there, to spend Saturday and Sunday. Warty Green of North Loup was out to Frank Manchester’s Wednesday and bought Frank’s calves, but the weather was too cold and stormy to take them home and he left them until a warmer day. The farmers are talking of organiz ing a farmers’ union for groceries and other things which we believe will bo just the thing we want. They will hold a meeting at Schaupps in the future to organize. Stanley Krolikowski is going to have a sale before the first of March. Wonder if he isn’t going to make his hay first, as he has about 30 acres that isn’t put up yet. We hope that Stanley will have plenty of feed for his stock. _ Little Lester Manchester, the three vear-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Prank Manchester, while running across the floor playing, accidentally fell, strik ing his head on the side of the door, cutting a gash which leaves the little one with a pretty sore head E. F. Paddock and Albert Sawakinas went to Ashton last Monday to drive the Bull tractor home, which E. F. won in the Omaha Daily News son test some time ago, but found that the roads were too rough, so they left it in town until the roads get bet ter. Skating is now fine, although it has been pretty cold the past few even ings.We all enjoy it, anyway. Some of the young folks along the crefek have bought their skates, and as there are three ponds here, one in Brown’s pasture, the young and the old can have a most delightful time skating. Everybody is welcome to come and enjoy our skating parties. ORDER TO SHOW CAU8E. In District Court for Sherman Ct unty, Nebraska: Cora M. Niesner, administratrix of the estate of Henry Neisner, deceased, vs. Cora M. Neisner, Austin Neisner, a minor, Margaret Niesner, a minor, 1 and Frederick Niesner, a minor, de fendants. This cause came on for hearing up on the petition of Cora M. Niesner, administratrix of the estate of Henry Niesner, deceased, praying for a li cense to sell the following described real estate, to-wit: The west half of section twenty-one, township fourteen, range fourteen, ex cepting a tract described as follows: Commencing at the southeast cor ner of the said west half, running thence west along the south side there of 70 rods, thence north parallel with the east side thereof 182 6-7 rod: ‘hence east paral'e! with the south side thereof 70 rods to the east line thereof, thence south 182 6-7 rods along the east side thereof to the point of beginning, or a sufficient amount of the same to bring the sum of $3,500 for the payment of debts allowed against said estate and the costs of administration, there not being suf ficient personal property to pay the said debts and expenses. It is there fore ordered that all persons inter ested in said estate appear before me at the District Court Room in Loup City, Nebraska, on the 23rd day of February, 1916, at 10 o’clock A. M. to show cause why a license should not be granted to said administratrix to sell so much of the above described realestate of said deceased as shall be necessary to pay said debts and ex penses.
