In Idaho last week, with but two dissenting votes, the lower house passed an anti-alien ownership bill. The bill prohibits the ac quisition of land by alien persons, firms or associations. In other words, favors citizens of the Uni ted States as against foreigners. And why isn't that proper? If a man wants to live in a country and do business there, why shoiild not he make himself a citizen of such country. That applies as much to Americans who.go to other countries to squeeze ducats out of them as it does to the peo ple of foreign countries who come to the United States for the same purpose. If a country is good enough to live in and make money out of it is good enough to become an intregal part of it in all ways. Such anti-alien laws would save a deal of trouble between the various countries of the world. Protection to citizens in foreign countries who are there merely for money-making is not the least of the controversies and complies tions arising between the various nations of the earth. 'I'he time of the lower house at Lincoln taken up on the question of whether or not the members shall be allowed 10 cents worth of stamps daily has cost the tax-pay ers of the state many hundreds of dollars, and finally ends in that body settling that great question in the affirmative. The house boys will hereafter get 10 cents in stamps daily to either be used in writing constitutents or save them selves stamp purchases for a long time after their la(bore)ous legis lative stunts are past. But what does the constitution say? Does it not say in effect that members shall be entitled only to their per diem and mileage? If not, why did Norris Brown, while attorney general of the state, some years ago, so interpret the constitution and knock the president pro tem of the senate and speaker of the house out of the pretty little graft of S3 per day extra for presiding , I have rented my farm and am going to Colorado, 1 will sell at Public Auction at my place, two miles north and four miles east of Loup City, and half mile north and half mile west of Schaupps, and three miles north and three miles west of Ashton, on WEDSNESDAY, FEBRUARY, 3rd, 1915 commencing at 10 a. m. sharp 8 Plead of Horses 8 One Gray mare, 10 years old, wt.1100; Bay mare, 10 years old, wt. 1150; Roan horse, 11 years old,wt. 1100 Roan horse, 10 years old, wt. 1050; Sorrel pony, 10 years old wt. 950; Iron gray horse, 5 yrs old wt. 1250 Yearling colt; One spring colt; 34 Head of Thirteen milch cows, seven fresh and six will be soon; One yearling black bull; Four yearling and spring heifers; Pedigreed Holstein bull, 2 years old Fifteen yearling and spring steers lO Head of Hogs lO 15thPtTApiif Ut*and China S°WS’ and 311 brCd’ average weight from 300 t0 500 P°unds- will ^rrow March FOUR DOZEN BARRED PLYMOUTH ROCK CHICKENS Farm Machinery Ideal Deering 6-foot binder John Deere lister Moline walking cultivator Hosier end gate seeder Wagon truck and hay rack Nearly new DeLavel separator with power attachment . 2 hole power corn-sheller 3-rods of cribbing 3 sets of fly-nets 10 bu. Will some member of the house please answer? Abandonment of the primary method of nominating candidates for public offices, “root, trunk and branch”, to use the language of the author of the measure, is the purpose of a bill by Senator George B. McClellan of Big Horn county, which he introduced in Wyoming state senate last Thurs day. The bill provided for re peal of the direct primary act in its entirety, and for the nomina tion of candidates by the party convention system, with a proviso that a candidate may be nominat ed through a petition signed by a specified number of qualified elect ors of his district. The people are slowly waking up to a disgust of the expensive fool primary election system. Uncle Sam has made a new rul ing to the effect that if any one monkeys with a private mail box at your door or elsewhere about your property in the city or on rural routes, he will be dealt with by the United States court and by police court. Some of the fellows who have a habit of shoot I ing holes in mail boxes on rural routes and robbing same would be wise to let up before the old man gets them. Ord Quiz—They are talking of starting a state printery to be run by convict labor. That suggests something worth while. Why not select our state legislature from inmates of our penitentiary. With a bunch of cut-throats in the sen ate and a bevy of highwaymen and footpads in the house the busi ness of these institutions would not be done in worse style than it has been done for the past six years* Representative Anderson of Phelps county evidently thinks if the shortening of each saloon day to the hours between 7 o’clock «. m. and 8 o’clock p. m. is a good thing, still shorter hours for ir rigation would be better, so he introduces a bill to close saloons at 6 o’clock each evening, instead of 8 o’clock. Shades of Jim Dahl man! what do you think of that ? Holy smoke! Flour $1.90 per sack. And it is written “man shall not live by bread alone,” and be ing without the $1.90, goodbye, old earth, goodbye. Getting Wise to the Primary “I say without hesitation that the selection of candidates at a general primary has not tended to the elimination of corruption of politics or machine rule and the selection of better representatives of the party,” said former Presi William Howard Taft last Thurs day at Bloomington, Ind., in honor of foundation day for Indi ana university. “Nor is it true that the general primary is any less subject to control of a machine and the boss and political organi zation that a convention. ” Slugged by Thugs Thomas Whalen, former mar shal of Wood River, and for many years a resident there, it is re ported, was slugged by some un known person last Monday night while on his way home and while he was going by the Citizens bank. Mr. Whalen was found lying un conscious by Marshal Dunn at about eight o’clock in the evening, with a gash on the side of his head. John Whalen, his son, in Grand Island, stated that reports he received indicated that his father was struck with a pipe which had been found nearby. Mr. Whalen, Sr., had no enemies unless it might have been some prisoners whom he brought into custody and some of whom had served a term in the penitentiary. Mr. Whalen, Sr., has little to say of the incident._ Use Gooch’s Flour took first prize at the state fair again this year.
