A fire alarm was sent in but the was extinguished by members of the family before serious damage had been done and before the hose company could reach the place The fire developed in a barrel con taining a half dozen pieces of cured meat — bacon and ham. There had been no fire of any in the barrel, the meat was simply stored therein, and a loose cover covered the top, which would seem to preclude the possibility of a fire gaining any headway to in it but for all that the barrel was pretty well consumed by the fire before it was extinguished. The only theor.v on which the fire can be accounted for is spontane ous combustion, but those who have had the most experience in handling cured meats declare they never heard of spontaneous com bustion developing under such conditions.-Ravenna News.* The Christmas Thought.
