Postmaster-Editor Beushausen seems to be work
ing overtime in his efforts to defeat the candidacy of
this editor for representative. As editor of the Times
Independent, which he changed ostensibly into a
printing company, when he became postmaster, bul^
which he edits just the same, he loses no opportunity
to deride and roast the editor of the Northwestern in
his candidacy for representative, nor stops at that
but takes other ways and means to that end which
seem puny and brainless as well. Poor fellow. Should
the writer receive a majority at the coming election,
the effect upon poor Beush’s knot above the shoulders
would require a rest cure for him at Hastings, we
have little doubt.
Morehead made a pledge that he would not be a
candidate for re-election for governor. The platform
of the democratic party was to the effect that Wilson
would not be a candidate for a second term, but pro
bably will be. Beushausen claimed he was not a
candidate for postmaster, but after he had lulled the
Loup City democrats to sleep it was found that he was
and had been and had secured the appointment. Is
not the word of such great democratic leaders as Wil
son, Morehead and Beushausen to be believed?
The Lincoln papers tell of the arrest and fining of
Will Maupin, democratic candidate for railway com
missioner, for being in a gambling game in Lincoln,
but admit that Maupin paid the fine under the name
of Smith. Surely the democrats of the state were
aware of Maupin’s penchant for cards when they gave
him the nomination. Did he say it was his first of
fense?
— .. . — n
Beushausen says we worked against him for post
master. We did, but it would not have required any
effort on our part had his candidacy for postmaster
been open and above board. The democrats of Loup
City and vicinity and patrons of the postoffice gener
ally would have made it unnecessary.
“Gov,” Ceplecha, who filed as a candidate for
governor from Burwell, and who lost his wife during
the campaign, has again become “govenor”—of his
household—by finding another wife through a matri
monial agency guide. Did two griefs call for a third?
———— V
Bryan is slated for three days of campaign work
for democracy in Nebraska, With Howard, self-con
stituted mouth-piece for Bryan in this state against
Morehead for governor, it is interesting to contemplate
how far Bryan will go toward helping make Morehead’s
election sure.
With Nebraska democracy divided into Bryan and
anti-Bryan factions, it is believed that Bryan’s visit to
the state will muddle matters still further. Does
Bryan expect to muzzle and control the Hitchcock de
mocrats? If so, he will undoubtedly find the differ
ence between expectation and realization.
Really, what is Morehead’s valid excuse for becom
ing a candidate for governor the second time, when
he made a pledge and part of his personal platform
when running the first time that he would not become
a candidate for ra-election?
It is not necessary for Congressman Kinkaid to
come and visit Sherman county during this campaign.
The people know him and what he has dbne for the
people of his district arid will return him for still an
other term with an increased majority.

The war lords of the old country are seemingly
not only willing to sacrifice their wives’ relations
< . . i i, ■
but are willing to sacrifice their own flesh and blood,
providing their own hides are safely in the rear,
From all reports they would seem to indicate a
united republicanism .against a divided democracy
throughout Nebraska, with excellent ^chances for re
publican success.
Now that Bryan has come -out strong for equal
suffrage, of courte our Beush will be “Me too, Billy.”
