GARDINER Manager Just at present the whole world is aroused over the war rumors which are to the effect that all the principal and many of the smaller powers of the east ern continent are nearing conflict which may prove the greatest the country has ever witnessed. Up to last Saturday, only Austria-Hungary and Servia were embroiled and in active conflict, but with promise that Russia would interfere in behalf of Servia, and Germany calling upon the Czar to keep out of it or the Kaiser would join hands with Austria, with Eng land and France supporting the contentions of Rus sia and little Japan announcing she would get into the game as England's ally, it has the looks and pro mise of embroiling the whole continent in war. It is impossible at this stage of events to forecast the pro bable, but from present outlook it would seem that nothing short of a miracle would prevent bloodshed and devastation of all the big and little powers of the eastern continent. Our inside pages will be found filled with the war scare so far as it had gone up to the time of going to press with those pages. Last Thursday evening ended the present Chau tauqua session. That it has been an exceptionally good one is admitted by all. One of the best results of the present Chautauqua has been the organization of an association that shall provide amusement for our boys and girls. This is one of the needs of the hour. What shall our children do for amusement and recreation has been a momentous question, and no doubt in a large measure the above proposed organiza tion will answer the query satisfactorily. Some time this week, if it has not already been done before this meets the public eye, said organization will be perfected and plans adopted to that end. Possibly, some sixty or more of the fathers and mothers of our city have sub scribed their names and pledged their money to carry forward this splendid idea. Let our entire citizenship join in this movement which is for the betterment of our children and provide for innocent amusement as well as for the betterment in all ways of the rising generation. Over in Hbward county there are two democratic candidates for congressman who want to fill M. P. Kinkaid s shoes, but evidently the democrats of that county do not take kindly to one and are dead stuck on the other, as in county convention they endorsed the candidacy of one, Frank Taylor, with a hur rah, while the other, A. L. Covey, did not get a look in or even mention. But of course that was an emp ty honor, for Mr. Taylor, good man, though, will be so far distanced by the republican Moses, that he will be left at the first quarter stretch in the congressional race. Up in the sandhills country they do not know there is any other candidate than the man who made Kinkaid sections possible. Unless Providence or some like potent force inter venes, there will be one of . the greatest railroad strikes in the historv of this country staged tomorrow, (Aug. 7), when 55,000 firemen and engineers on the great railroads operating west of Chicago are to go out on a strike, which will tie up every system in that zone. Every effort is being put forth, even President Wilson offering his services to prevent the widespread disaster which would follow such a calamity. With wheat harvesting at 35 bushels to the acre and oats going to 50 and 60 bushels to the acre, things loom up pretty good to our farmers. Stand up for Sherman county and be assured of a bumper crop of corn to top off with. By the way, what has become of the Mexican trouble? Since the big pow wow started among the old continent powers the Mexican imbroglio seems to have been dwarfed into insignificance. Your favors will be appreciated. R. P. Starr. To the Voters of the 22nd. Sena torial District composed of the couu ties of Buffalo.Kearney aDd Sherman. Having announced myself as a can didate for the nomination, on the Democratic and Peoples Independent ticket for the office of Senator from the 22nd. District which I now repre sent and my position on the question of the removal of the State Univer sity haviug been brought in issue. I want to make a specific statement on that question which no one can mis understand. During the last session of the Leg islature this question was earnestly discussed on both sides before the leg lature. I regarded it as a question of much importance to the people of tie whole state that it should after pr> i per. discussion, be settled by the peo ple and not by the Legislature. I therefore voted to submit the ques tion to the people of the state and if j it receives a constitutional majority, j like every other citizen I will be bound by the vote but if the question does not receive a constitutional mi joritv at the polls and if it should lie brought before the Legislature again during the next two years. I will vote i against the removal of the University unless for some good, just reason it is 1 shown that the removal of that in stitution would be better for the pe> of the state and the University. I state this specifically because it, has been suggested that even if the proposition does not-carry at the polls the membors of the Legislature can • ignore the vote and move the Univer isitv upon their own responsibility. I further state that at the election in November I will vote as a citizen against the removal. Respectfully. PETFR WINK.
