It is said that it is at Governor Morehead’s sugges
tion that the state board of control has virtually
given up the idea of buying land and building the
state reformatory authorized by an act of the last
legislature which appropriated $150,000 for the pur- |
pose, beleiving that conditions at the penitentiary
have been so improved during the past year as to
make it possible to dispense with the proposed re
formatory, This is possibly true. But this act is a
state law. Is the governor a judge of the law or
merely an executor?
Just at present Bryan is considering the question
of going on the Chautauqua platform again this sea
son. Just how long Bryan could keep from going bug
house if he was shut off from working his mouth at so
much per, is a mooted question. But really what a
spectacle it is of a cabinet officer lowering the dignity
of his great office by becoming a Chautauqua attrac
tion, to line his pockets with fakir-made money.
Senator Sherman’s prediction of a republican
landslide in 1916 is in keeping with the generally hope
ful feeling among republicans that the democratic par
ty has again made a muss of it and that the react
ion will be in favor of the “grand old party” of pro
tection and prosperity. Of cource it’s pretty early to
tell about that, but it can not be gainsaid that there
is present reason for feeling good
To those of the Northwestern readers interested
in the wrestling game, the result of the Billeter-Daily
lightweight champion match at Lincoln last Thursday
will be especially interesting, as Daily, the Nebraska
boy, defeated the champion in two straight falls, the
first in 4 minutes and 56 seconds, and the second
fall in 51 minutes and 43 seconds. Nebraska has
now the champion lightweight wrestler of the world.
Just at present Nebraska democracy has ’steen
candidates for governor, and yet there are a number
of the unterrified who will not rest until Dick Metcalfe
also gets into the game. Would it not leave a few
high privates in the rear ranks, to have the whole
push making a mad rush for office?
So far, during the political days, we have heard
of no candidates up for representatives, county attor
ney, or several other county offices. However, there
is plenty of time before the close of filings before the
primary farce.
