GARDINER Manner It is barely possible that the big mail order and catalogue concerns of the country are not as finan cially healthy as we are wont to believe. Last week the big Siegel stores in New York City went smash, throwing 2,000 employes out of work, and worse than that, got away with all the savings of years deposited said employes in the Siegel bank. The fund was cre ated by a weekly assessment of 2 per cent on the sal aries of employes. The savings fund seems to have gone down in the general collapse, with suspicion of rascality by the Siegels. Kelley’s army which started out from San Fran cisco to go to Washington, made a gallant start, got as far as Sacramento, and then blinked out. There the leaders were arrested and the army driven across the Sacramento river into Yolo county and there herded. The number has dwindled from some 1600 to about 500 and will be prevented making a spectacular go across-the-country, even if Col.(?) Bryan has to be sent for to duplicate his wonderful military achieve ments of the Spanish-American War. There is a growing sentiment in this country in favor of the postal vote, that shall allow a citizen though away from home, to cast his vote on an elec tion, and have it counted. We had that thought as far back as 1876, when in New York state we were denied the right to express our presidential preference because of citizenship in a distant state. We are glad the question is coming up and believe the right of citizens to vote should not be denied, though away from home at election time. “Candidates for county superintendent, county, district and supreme judges, as well as candidates for regent of the state university will not appear on the primary ballot,” according to the belief of Judge But ton of Hastings, who holds that there is no reason for the names going on the primary ticket, as the new law contemplates taking these offices out of politics. North Loup nearly made it unanimous last week Wednesday, when by a vote of 113 to 24 they voted to bond the village for £20,000 for a water works and electric light system. It is the only village in the Loup valley to vote municipal bonds for both a water works and electric light system. In spite of President Wilson’s known antipathy to the literacy test in the immigration bill before con gress, and the possibility that he may veto the bill with the test in it, friends of the measure refuse to drop the test part, not believing the president will veto the entire bill because of it. The president last Thursday signed the bill au thorizing the expenditure of $35,000,000 for the con struction of a government owned railroad in Alaska. This cannot fail to materially help in opening up the country to the north more rapidly. Arthur Asher, the Pleasanton man who was hurt last week in the explosion of dynamite, was taken to Omaha a day or two later, where one eye was re moved in order to possibly save the other, which was uninjured. Asher may pull through, but was not out of danger at last accounts. If our hearing does not mislead us, that stirring little political wire worker, Peter C. Rowe, is being groomed for the democrat nomination for sheriff. If Pete goes after the pippin, it’ll have to do some spec tacular stunts keep out of his reach. And say, by the way, from what we can hear the play is worth go ing many miles t > see, and is said to be a hum dinger, as the boys would say. Joe says if you are not satisfied with the play, you can go to the door and get your money back, if you are able to get the necessary action. Let every body go and see our Ashton dramatic friends, show them we appreciate their coming and you will get your money's worth many times over, and then some. i OBJECTS TO COIRT HORSE A man living, or rather staying, in the west side of the county, and whose taxes, real and personal, would not amount to $10 per year, according to one who knows him well, is working overtime against the proposition for a new court house, on complaint that it will be a burdensome increase in his taxes.
