Gas Discovered in Nebraska — Workmen engaged in drilling: for water on the farm of Commo dore O. Grady, three miles north east of Dawson, Neb., has struck gas in ninty feet of sand. The roar of escaping gas was heard for a half a mile above the sound of the drilling machinery. Some water was struck' The gas causes it to bubble and roar and steam while throwing it out. Tnis confirms the idea that there is oil and gas, as well as other mineral deposits in southeastern Nebraska. The location of this hole is on a ridge somewhat higher than the surrounding ground, between the Muddy and Nemaha rivers. It is a district where there has been more or less trouble getting water, although many springs crop out on equally high ground within a mile of this gas well. The state i geologist is expected here to look over this proposition, as it is the first of its kind in the state of Nebraska. i Sherman County School Notes. By Supt. L H.Currier February is the month of birth days. The schools should spend much time in the study of the flag and patriotic themes. The schools I that hare a flag’ should display it on the birthdays of all promient men. For those that have no flag it would be an opportune time to raise money to get them. The following birthdays should be celebrated in some way in every school: Lincoln's Feb. 12: Washington’s Feb. 22: Longfel low *s Feb. 27. These are times at which facts concerning these great men can be impressed upon the minds of the young. The sixty-third Congress begins on March 4. It will consist of 961 senators and 433 representatives. The superintendent has received some excellent monthly reports; for January. These reports show j a large increase in the average daily attendance over the same month last year. The county fair managers are offering a prize of $3 to the school having the larg est average daily attendance. Pu- j pils, help win this prize for your school day from now until your school closes. The mayor of Boston is asking every school boy and school girl to commit the Athenian Oath to memory. Such an oath could well be subscribed to every boy and girl in our county. The oath is given below: "We will never bring disgrace to this country by any act of cowardice or dishonesty. We will fight for the ideals and sacred things of the country. We will revere and obey our country's laws, and to our best to incite a like respect and revernce in others. We will strive unceasingly to quicken the public's sense of duty. We will transmit this country to those who come after us, greater, better, and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.’’ Are you planing on attending the Buffalo and Sherman counties' joint meeting of teachers at Ra venna Feb. 14 ?
