DECEMBER 18 1913. , NUMBER 6 WESTSIDE MATTER AT BOILING POINT Potter Bound Over to District Court-Clancy Gets New Hearing-New Counts Against Potter and Cording for Alleged Boose Selling-Damage Suits Brought Against Campbell by Potter and Cording In Amounts of $7000 to $9000 Respectively. TWO MORE DAMAGE SUITS TO BE INSTITUTED. Last Thursday came the prelim inary hearing of State vs. C. V. Potter on the charge of. keeping liquors in his store with intent to sell. The case was called about 11 o’clock, with Judge Aaron Wall assisting County Attorney Pedler in the prosecution and Attorney R. P. Starr for defend ant. Owing to some minor de fect in the complaint, the prosecu tion amended same, which called from thfe defense a motion for a continuance, which was denied. The prosecution then proceeded with their side, placing on the wit n:ss stand the marshal of Litch field and the two detectives who had been hired by the Law and Order League to secure evidence of booze selling in Litchfield. Af ter the prosecution had shown their hand and rested, the defense refused to plead, made a motion for the discharge of defendant, which was denied and the court bound defendant over to the next district court in the sum of $500, accepting the bond of defendant and wife and John Anderson. Friday following the above hearing came up the case of Stafie vs. Frank Clancy, on complaint selling liquor contrary to law, etc. There being a defect in the papers, the defendant’s attorney, R. P. Starr, asked a continuance of the. case, which the court granted and thfe hearing set for the last day in this month. Friday of last week, also, proved an interesting day in Litchfield matters, more history being added. On that day complaints were got ten oat against both Jos. Cording and C. A. Potter, both druggists, of Litchfield, and papers served on them for alleged selling of liquors contrary to law. The complaint against Cording consists of ten counts and the name of Henry Beck is signed to said complaint. That against Potter consists of four counts and is signed by John H. Mead and John Heins as com plainants, and the hearing in both cases is set for the 13th day of January, 1914. But it seems that the Law and Order League and its leaders are not to have the history all one way. Damage suits galore are filed and to be filed against vari ous parties connected with the league. For instance, a damage suit has been instituted by Drug gist Cording against J. T. Camp bell in the amount of $9,000, aris ing out of the late troubles, while a suit for $7,000 has been institut CORBET ASH HELD TO THE HIST. COURT Broken Bow, Neb., Dec. 12.— (Special.)—Corbet Ash, charged with enticing Lillie Hutt, a 16 year-old girl, away from her home, has been held to district court by County Judge Holcomb. The girl testified on the stand that Ash had arranged the whole affair and giv en her money to go to Alliance, where he afterwards met her. fj>he said that they were to meet a brother of Ash’s and go with him to a ranch near Laramie, Wyo. Besides the above, we understand two or more damage suits are shortly to be instituted against other members of the league, and may have already been done ere this paper reaches our readers, but will not record until they become matters of re cord. The Northwestern will try and keep up with the rapid history making on the west side and give our readers the benefit of what is being done, if possible, but the pace is getting quite rapid. The case of J. T. Campbell, brought before the county court some time since for the second time for driving his auto without lights after night, and the case going over to Dec. 16, for trial. Mr. Campbell at the time refusing to plead guilty and asking a con tinuance, came to a speedy end Tuesday, the day for trial, Mr. Campbell pleading guilty and pay ing th^ assessed damage of $50 for his second offense. - - - PASTOR MEETS INSTANT DEATH Rev. W. C. Miller, Fcr.ner Resident of This County, Fells From Wind mill Crushing His Skull. WAS WELL KNOWH HERE. Word has bedn received here of the death of Rev. W. C. Miller, at Edenburg, Texas, some three weeks ago, the funeral being held on last Thanksgiving Day. Rev. Miller will be remembered as leaving here some three years ago for Texas to make his home. He owned land just south of this city and was well known here where he had lived for a number of years. The cause of his death, it is re ported, was by a fall from a wind mill* crushing his skull. He had ascended to the top to see if his son, who had been exchanging work with a neighbor, was on his way home, when his foot slipped and he fell to the ground beneath with the above result. DEATH OF MRS. AKTOBE TRYBA On last Sunday morning, at about 6 o’clock, occurred the death of Mrs. Antone Tryba, at their home a few miles up the valley, at the age of 36 years. Mrs. Try ba has been in ill health for over a year, but finally succumbed to the dread disease tuberculosis. The funeral occurred Tuesday morning from St. Josephat church in this city, a large number of friends of the deceased being pre sent, after which her remains were laid to rest in the Catholic ceme tery. Deceased left to mourn her her loss a husband and four child ren, a daughter and three sons, be sides lumerous'relatives. University Dramatic Club Billed Here We are pleased to note that un der the auspices of the-K. of P. order in this city the University Dramatic Cluij has been secured to come to Loup City a second time and give our people the dramati zation of the new and popular play* “Servant in the House,” which they have presented in the city of Lincoln to crowded houses, and have consented to make the pre sentation of the same in 1 oup City as one of the four points at which they will give the pay in the state outside of Lincoln. The company will be remembered as coming here to open our new opera house a year dr so ago with the dramazation of “All of a Sudden Peggy,” which scored such a hit, in this city, and which was wit nessed by the opera house crowd ed by our very best people. The “Servant in the House” is most highly spoken of as being one of the very best, and the equal, if not superior, of “All of a Sudden, Peggy, ” which of itself bespeaks a play that will prove an evening of great enjoyment to our people when it is given here. A commit tee from the K. of P. local lodge has been appointed to solicit the patronage of our play-going peo ple and we have no doubt every available seat in the opera house will be taken for that evening. It is the intention of Mr. and Mrs. Shipley to visit brothers, sisters a d parents in various parts of the county till after the holidays. They formerly were re sidents of Sherman county. Buy your Holiday goods early at the Rexall Drug Store. REPORT OF BUR LINGTON CHARGE Seems to Be Only Rumor Without the Least Foundation. A rumor that the Burlington was to change time after Jan.- 1st, going east about 3:30 in the morn ing, instead of 7:10, is evidently the product of the hallucinations of the Arcadia depot agent’s brain, from which source it came to this city. Calling up our Burlington agent, he says nothing doing so far as he knows, not even a hint of any change, has been received here. It js possibly along the same diseased imagination of the party or parties who have kept up the report that the U. P. motor on this branch is to be taken off and a steam train substituted in its stoad. I - .. JURY AWARD McCARTY $10,000 Defense Will Seek to Have Verdict Set Aside and New Trial—Prob ably Go to Supreme Court. ACCIDENT HAPPENED JULY LAST. ■ The personal damage case of James McCarty against the Village of Ravenna, for. injuries sustained by Mr. McCarty while working the city pumping plant, in July last, was tried in district court at Kearney, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. A dozen or more Ravenna people were in attend ance, many of them appearing as witnesses for the opposing sides. The case went to the jury Wed nesday afternoon and Thursday morning the verdict was made known. Mr. McCarthy was awarded damages in the amount of $10,000. j The amount of damages award ed is something of a surprise to those who have been familiar with the facts of the case and with the evidence and testimony adduced at the trial. FATAL ACCIDENT BEFALLS CHILD Pulls Plug From Washing Machine Letting Boiling Hot Water Pour Over Its Body. ONE SIDE LITERALLY COOKED The eleven-months-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hall of Round I Valley, was so badly burned by scalding water last Monday morn ing that it died Wednesday even ing, at 10 o’clock. Mrs. Hall had just filled the washing machine with boiling water, preparatory to begining her weeks washing, when the little one who was play ing on the floor crept up to the machine and worked the plug loose, letting a stream of scalding water pour over its little body, burning the eye, face on the right side, and the right arm until the flesh sloughed off in great pieces. Its right side and the right side of its back down to the waist line was literally cooked by the steam and scalding water. Thfe funeral will be held today at ll o’clock at the house.—Sargent News, Dec. I2th. Mrs. S. F. Reynolds left this morn ing for a visit with her sister, Mre. S. DeWitt at Jefferson, Iowa. The Loup City Merc. Co. stdre will be closed after 10 o’clock on Christ mas day. Mrs. J. A. Danielson left Monday morning for a visit with relatives and friends at Red Oak and other points in Iowa. DELANO AGAIN SECRETARY Whether the agricultural inter ests of the state can best be served by a thorough reorganization of the Nebraska State Board of Agri culture is a subject that is to be taken up by a committee repre senting the various agricultural in terests of the state, if the suggest ions of a resolution adopted by the Nebraska Farmers’ congress at its closing session in Omaha last Friday are followed. This action in regard to the State Board of Agriculture was the result of an attack T. F. Sturgess of Omaha made in the convention Thursday on three members of the Board of Agriculture, Youngers, Mellor and Rudge, when he charged that The following officers of the A. O. G. Henry and family re turned to Gibbon Tuesday morning. .— ^ ' " ===! Primrose Bank Robber Confesses The mystery of the Primrose bank robbery was cleared up last week by the confession, of Hugh H. Simms, aged 20 years, who had been arrested on suspicion of doing the deed. Another man, Paul Parsen, a farmer of Primrose was also arrested and confessed planning the robbery. Parsen’s father-in-law, Michael Lamb, for whom young Simms was work* ing, is under suspicion as being concerned in the robbery. Thirty seven hundred out of the $4,000 was recovered hidden on the Par sen farm, some of it in a chicken coop and part in a corn shock. At a meeting of the Board of Man agers of the Snerman County Agri cultural Society it was decided to give premuims for rural and grade school work. Let every school enter into this work. A. E Chase, Secertary. We were favored last Thursday af ternoon by a pleasant call from our big friend, Henry Beck, who was ac companied by Wm. Garnett and John Heines, also of the west side of the county, who were here as interested spectators at the preliminary hear ing in the case of the State against C. A. Potter, one of the many cases arising out of the Litchfield troubles. Both latter gentlemen also added their names to the Northwestern list of readers, as they like Mr. Beck, want to keep posted on all county news. SCHOOL NOTES Wednesday evening Dec. 10 the Freshmen entertained the Junors. All present enjoyed the evening very much. The Misses Josephine Adams and Mae Burford of Kearney visited the High school Monday. The pupils of the grades are making calendars, booklets etc., for Xmas presents. The Scott children who moved to town lately, have entered school. The enrollment so far this year is four hundred and seven, twenty-four more than last year. Last Saturday evening the Sopho mores held a class party at the home of Alberta Outhouse. Francis Nightingale returned from Walthill*and is again enrolled in the second grade. Last Saturday the lady teachers spent a very pleasant day at St. Paul. They were the guests of Miss Celia Conklin. ! ~ t As we are going to press we learn that Fritz Bichel had just met with an accident. While returning home from here with a four horse load of lumber his team become frighened at a motor cycle this side of the west bridge, shied to one side over-turning the load of lumber, throwing Fritz to the ground fracturing several ribs and cuttlnsghis head quite hadly, we are unable to learn full particulars. Join our big land excursion for the lower Bio Grande valley. A special of the Jackson-Vreland Land Co. of Kansas City will leave Arcadia Jan 6th. Parties wishing to enjoy this trip can have the accomodation of not having to change cars during the en tire trip. STORK VISITATIONS Last week the editor was made happy by the news that he was again made grandpa, a little daughter being born Friday, Dec. 5tli, 1913, at Spen cer, Iowa, to his daughter, Mrs. Geo. A. Phipps. This makes the fifth time that his first born daughter has made him a happy grandpa, the fam ily now being represented by four boys and one girl. May the little an gel of the petticoat persuasion cause as much joy in her immediate house hold as the mother caused in our household when she came to brighten the home some thirty-one years ago. Later—Mr. Burleigh received a telegram Wednesday forenoon stat ing that his daughter was very low, and not expected to live, and depart ed on tde noon motoi the same day to be at her bedside. Bom, Saturday night of Dec. 13. to Mr. and Mrs. Leslie S. Lyons, in this city, a charming baby girl. Moth er and daughter doing nicely. Palmyra, Wis., Dec. 5.—J. W. Burleigh, Loup Cito, Neb. Dear Editor: We arrived, Mr. Foss, Wilma and I, the 4th at half past eleven at Janesville, Wis.,safe and tired, both eyes and body, from looking at the sights, which are fine, of course there are grander scenes in the country, but the country here has such a spring like look. The grass is green and the flowers in bloom. At Aurora they had a sick horse and had to un load the car. Then they started again on the second, staying in the yards at Lincoln from eleven till five, then on to Omaha on the Chicago roacTthrough Cedar Ra pids, crossing the Mississippi at Clinton, Iowa,arriving at my son’s in due time. This evening will be their wedding anniversary, which they intend to celebrate, and will also give Mr. and Mrs. Barr a reception, if the groom ar rives. Sunday, the groom failed to arrived, but we certainly had a fine time, the evening was spent at cards and prizes awarded, I, of course won the booby, ceived a telephone call fr Doys at Beloit, they were all right only cold. At Recton Mr. Foss found some of his relatives he hadn’t seen for forty years. And one old auntie whojs 87 years old knew his voice over the telephone and said “It is Sanford.” In Decalb we saw many curious things in the stores, among which were a man four feet tall and a woman three feet tall. Tomorrow we go down to Pal myra, our future home, I am very anxious to see it. It is quite cool here this morning, as your bliz zard is comiug this way; please keep them at home.
