The Arcadia Champion raises its
subscription rates the first of July
to $1.50 per year. Sowly butsurelv

year rate are coming to their senses.
County Treasurer F. M. Henry has
been on the sick list the past two weeks
and unable to be down town to the
office. Ex-County Treasurer Riddle
son was attending to the office during
his illness and Miss Needham’s absence

nounce that he is now prepared to re
ceive pupils in singing and voice pro

Rev. J. C. Tourtellot left Monday
for a week’s visit in eastern Iowa.

at the Presbyterian church when an

Mrs. Lincoln Thompson of South
Omaha arrived last Friday for an ex
tended visit with her brothers, the
Johansen boys, and sisters, Mesdames
French, Oltmann and hosts ’of friends
here.
John W Long, son John, daughter
Margaret and Mark Johansen, left
last Saturday morning for Lincoln,
where they will be joined by W. R.
Mellor, then the party leave for a
trip to the lakes at Alexandria,Minn.,
for a two weeks’ camping out.
Henry Jenner last Thursday receiv
ed by express two fine specimens of
diamond-back rattlesnakes from Gua
temala, Central America, which have
been placed in a glass case and are
on exhibition at the park. They are
said to be the largest specimens tfver
brought to this country.
McCarthy, the Ravenna boxer, has
gone to Los Angeles to see if be can
not get up among the top-notcbers in
tbe ring game, as pugilistic encoun
ters are being barred everwbere in
Nebraska, and be goes where the
game is yet popular.
To get stuck in mud under almost
any circumstances is not pleasant,but
when it iswn auto party in a big bar
and have to be hauled out by a team
of some husky farmer, as was thecase
of friend J. P. Leininger and family
on a visit to Sargent a few days’ since,
it is not found' to be a laughing mat
ter.

Ravenna will not celebrate the 4th
this year. Better the good people of
that live berg and surrounding country
come to Loup City and enjoy the cel
ebration of the Nation’s great holiday
at Jenner’s park, the nicest in central
Nebraska, if indeed not the finest out
side of Omaha.
Hie wife and kiddies belonging to
the Northwestern arrived home from
Iowa last Saturday noon and now we
are happy as a dam at high tide and
don’t care who knows it.' Talking
about high living here, it is not more
than half to two-thirds what it is in
Central Iowa, when the better half
says eggs are selling at 30c to 35c per
dozen, butter to about the nine price
and all other produce in like propor
tion. Stood up for Nebraska, when
living to the cheapest in Che west
even If we do feel like squealing some
times over prices.

the Dast twelve years in our city
schools, and has proven one of the best
of our teachers in all that time.
Dr. J. E. Bowman returned from
Lincoln last Friday evening, where he
was on business after a visit with his
mother at York whom he left conva
lescing from her illness.
Alexander, the 8t. Paul pitcher,
and brother of St. Paul’s great pride
of the Phillies, seems to have not beer,
able to be the whole thing in the box
of the city of saints and they hav e
secured a Grand Island phenom to
help him and now feel cock sure of
winning the pennant in the Sherman
Howard league.
Miss Mabel Barnes went up to Loup
City last week where she has accepted
a position with the First Trust Com
pany as stenographer. Miss Mabel is
well able to perform the duties re
quired in that position and she will be
a valuable and efficient member of

up and blown down and otherwise
made the victim of the flings of out
rageous fortune on nu onerous occasions
is again on the road with a summer
tent show, said to be bigger and bet
ter than ever, and will doubtless show
up in Ravenna before the close of the

We see by our exchanges that varans
towns are incorporating rest rooms
for people co ming to town to do trad
ing. That is something Loup City
should do for our friends from the
country. TskeSaturdays, for instance,
with the large crowds In town, larm

walking our streets, with babes in
thir arms and young children by their
sides, with no place to rest, unless
they apter the crowded stores. Bow

and inviting. The expense would be
nominal, and the thanks of the people
would more than repay us for the ex
pense. Loup City baa a large number

M iss Lizzie Leininger and mother,
Mrs. Margaret Leininger, left Tues
day morning for Aurora, Miss Lein
inger going thence to the Pacific coast
as per announcement in the North
western last week. She was delayed
| a week in getting started.
Rev. P. Jueling went to Farwell
Monday morning, where he preached
the funeral sermon of Joseph Wich
man. Sr., aged 97 years and well known
in Sherman county. He was the
oldest pioneer of Howard county. He
was born in Hanover, Germany in
181fi, and came to this country in
1850. and in 1873 to Howard county,
where he had since lived. He is sur
vived by his widow, ten years his
junior, and 4 sons and 1 daughter.
