RICH I re * r*„ « » cxand island Horse Disease Still Spreads The ooly thing new in the horse disease spreading over Kansas and Ne braska is the new cases coming up. From ali quarters comes reports of the increasing number of cases, while *ave from questionable reports from a distance we liear of no cures, and iiardly believe there have been any. I It la claimed that a Holdredge veter inarian lias found a cure in antitoxin treatment, having had seven cures out of nine cases, the two Jost being bones in the last stages of tiie dis ease. but the report is considered something of a fable by veterinarians here snd elsewhere. All sorts of cures and preventives are being used and experiments made, but so far with no appreciable results. One veterinarian re* orts his belief tliat tlie trouble is caused by some kind of an insect which lives in the blades of grass and oUier green stuff which lias sprung up as a second growth since the wet weather began, and is thought to be found more especially in low pastures or in pastures and lots not properly drained. It is alleged that even a noo-eipert tan easily tell when a lion* has the disease, as the animal becomes stupid, but sometimes grows b:it*d in either one or both of his eyes and walks in a circle, usually to the left. There is a nervous working of the ears and occasionally the animal will liar- a spasmodic action or the tNvk which doubles the neck down | ward until the head is between the 1 .relegs. Some of the horses, when wandering in a circle, will run against I fences off barn us they do when U.ei have the blind staggers, and iirArij an anecteci horses ^rind and gri-iiii i litif teetk Day bv day comes rep >rts from all over the state of in jert-asing cases, »i th consequent death '■! ail a£-.-cted with the disease. This "■■l numerous cases are reported daily of new cao*s, and Dr. Evans of 'tins cit is constantly on the go on i cab of disease stricken animals. The ;<1 '.or willingly admits the disease is B ' ed problem witii him, al ti. jfgh J,e is bending all energies to Jind some cure cr at least relief for ti* lime being but so far with abso i-ieiy no response. L'p to last Satur uay. Dr. Evans had been called to ••ome nine cases, and since tliat time anu so far tins week, he has'been con suuitl> on the go. We could name dozens of cases in this county in and around Loup City so far. but they are getting so numerous that it is useless to quote any particular ones. It is to be hoped relief will speedily come, even by early frosts, which is generally conceeded to be the only thing possible, the frosts killing the germs and stopping the raid on the lives of these most invaluable animals on the farm or elsewhere. HORSE DISEASE Owners of Missouri Valey Horses Take Notice-important At a meeting of tile prominent vet erinarians at Lincoln, called at the instance of Gov. Aldrich, to investi gate the disease commonly called For age Poisoning or Cerebro-Spinal Men j ingitis, the following precautions I were recommended: 1) All horses and mules should be removed from pastures and placed in bar'.s or dry lots winch are entirely j free from vegetation. ;2; Last year's or an early cutting : of this year's hay should be fed. Old grain should be used in preference to new or recently threshed grain. Add | a small quantity of flaxseed meal to U*e feed morning and night and con ; tinue until a laxative effect is pro ! duced. (3) Water with a bucket direct from the well. Where tanks must be used, -crub and rinse the water tanks thor oughly. When dry give a coat of lime whitewash. Wash the tank every , week as long as the disease exists in ! the neighborhood. 4 When once the disease attacks an animal Lite power to swallow is j more or less impaired and ownersI j sirould exercise due caution inadmin j istering any medicine in the form of ! la drench. So far. medicinal treat I ment is unsatisfactory. In the light of present information more good can be accomplished along the line of pre vention. -V We recommend that all horses' •and mules dying from this disease I should be burnt or buried six feet un j der ground and one bushel of lime I | used on each and every carcass. (6; We also recommend that ani- j i rnais dying from this disease should 1 not be skinned, since transportation j ! of such skins may spread the disease, j E. T. Rand- i all the communication to county superintendents and teachers, which we trust every parent and pation of our schools will read for their instruc tion and in the matter of education along the lines spoken of in the letter to county superintendents. There has been too little heed taken in this matter for the safety of our children, and if a tire were to break out to morrow in any one of the public schools of this county, we fear the panic and lack of drill would result in serious injury to many of the cliildren. especially to the smaller ones who would be run over and trod-1 den under foot by the older ones in a j panic which would be sure to ensue. I and fortunate indeed would it be if deatli in many cases would notresult, especially in the larger and more crowded departments of tne city schools. We are glad to publish the following and trust it may be a salu tary warning to teachers, resulting in uie must, carei ui urins auu metnoas to escape death or at least injury in case of tire. Besides, ilie instruction received by the scholars would be of untold benefit in case of lire in the j homes, as the children w ould natural- ! ly he cooler and more contained and ' essentially help, instead of hinder, in the escape iroui any casualties which might otherwise result. Too great care can not he taken iu the possible outbreak of tire in the schools or homes of our dear ones, and we should go to the greatest ends for their safety and best welfare: To County Superintendents of Public Instruction: 1 desire t,i call your attention to the law providing lor the teaching of tfre prevention in the public schools of tins state. There has been expressed to you prepaid a sufficient number of the Fire Prevention Text books for you to furnisli one to ever.v teacher' in your county. During the past winter 1 visited several of the towns in the state and I find that but a very small per ceutage of them are teaching this subject, nor are they observing Fire Day, or practicing Fire Drills. I am enclosing you a copy of the law which you will find on the last page of the hook, and it is imperative. The books are provided with lessons commencing with the month of Sep tember and including June. 1 trust you will see that these books are properly distributed and this subject is given attention by every teacher during the coming school year and if you liavj not sutticient books for dis tribution among the teachers of your county, if you will indicate to me how many you need we will see that vou are supplied with them. I shall be pleased to hear what your course of procedure will be in the matter. Yours truly, C. n. Randall. Chief Deputy Fire Commissioner. PROGRESSIVE PARTY Sherman County Mass Convention.
