II** ' ^aid that since the war in Mexico the future is much brighter fur the coun try and it was a step upwards. The people of Mexico as a rule are very * poor, many of them do not own any thing but a blanket and when night comes their sheitea is the sky the! ground their bed. Many that have houses do not cook on stoves, but build fires of sticks outside of the house and eook in that wa x'. We Lad one cold ni>fht while at Brownsville. Jan. 11th, and the roses and many of the gardens and cabbage Helds wer.i badly injured. On our re turn to San Juan we found many fields of cabbage that had recently lM-eii set out were killed by the freeze, but the larger cabbage was not ii - jured very bid and will make a crou.j >ome had sod jt fl5o per acre out at j San llernitis. San Juan is a little v ilia pc and about, one year old since the town was plated ' out and is making a veay fast growth ! and is one of the very best warming in this irrigated district. 1 firstcamel down on (let.and purchased some! land on what is called. M. Street, as i the land i> sold in small tracts. They call the roads streets, and on my re turn J*ec. iTJnd: in going out to my land, which is two and a half miles out. 1 passed seven houses and now there are fourteen, seven having tjeen built since coming down, and others to built soon. This will fie a sec. ond ( aliform . I do not include the Mat* of Texas, but refer to this email section of the country on the llio <• rande \ alter, for in passing through tlie state of Tesas tiiere are I' mt places for health and farming I might say worthless. This country is filling ur> very fast There are two special trains from the each to .nt ii. ami owing to the sm.w blockades Uiey failed to make connections and last Friday the Standard Land Company from Lin coln arrived with three coaches, and [ n Friday night the Star Co., arrived ! w ith two caches, and on Saturday; the Western Land Co., from Denver -ol in with two coaches bringing o.ie • each for the Standard Land Co.’ This will give vou an idea of the strong imiteration to this part of Texas. It was a (treat sight to see this great body of people go out loo k irigat land in autom obile-. 1 thought ti.at the day of --elling land had larg‘ I) passed, but to see the treat activ ity ' * f «• |.t:s menoed. Tlie farmers are planting p hat'.*-- and preparing the ground for corn and cotton. The straw berries are in bloom, and I can hardly realize that it is January. Before leaving home. I tried to get some of my friends to come with me but coud not get them to do so. ant: it reminds me of the old ministei that 1 heard aliout in southern Missouri, llis former presiding el dor came from north to visit him so be thought he would prepare a feast of good things, and some of the good things were strawberries, and In built a real pyreaamid. Then he poured thick cream over the lierries sprinkled sugar over them put thick cream over them again and sprinkled more sugar over them, then he said said ■ ■Brother have some st ra when ies’ The old presiding elder said “So brother, I will just eat prunes." So now. to niv friends who did not accept ray kind invitation to come south, you have just stayed at home and have been easting cold prunes. A. L. Zimmorean.
