We received a pleasant call last Fri day from John and Herman de la Motte of Hazard township, who were at the county seat on business. Billy Oltmann is having a stren uous time so far this Leap Tear. He says the girls are all after him, but excitedly exclaims, “Igod I can’t marry the whole push.” T. D. Wilson and wife, his son, T. C. Wilson and family who are here visiting, went to Ord Friday for a ten days' visit with Mr. Wilson's daughter, Mrs. B. D. Sutton. We received a pleasant call Tues day from R. R. Bauhard of Logan township who added his name to our growing list. He is one of the sub stantial young farmers of that township. Hiram Cramer left Monday mom for Luzerne, N. Y., to the bedside of his father, of whom we spoke last week as being very low with drop sical affection. We trust he will find the father better. Col. Jack Pageler was called to Saunders county last Saturday Morn ing where he was to cry a big fine stock sale on Monday. Jack is fast gamin? an enviable reputation as a first-class auctioneer. Miss Mary Domgard lost her shop ping bag last Saturday between the residence of Marvin Lee and the west bridge. Finder please leave same at the Northwestern office and receive suitable reward. Mrs. G. H. Gibson, wife of the ed itor, received a letter from her native home In Pennsylvania, yesterday morning, informing her of the death of her brother, John Barnes.—Zeph yrhills (Fla.,) Colonist. Mr. and Mrs. Theo. D. Wilson are enjoying a visit from their son, T. C. Wilson, and family of Ashton. He is a worthy chip off the old block. He is one of the most progressive farmers of that township. Mrs. Victor Johnson, who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. McLaughlin the past two weeks, was called home to Hampton last Saturday morning by the serious ill ness of tier husbaud, who is under going a siege of pneumonia. The “Strollers" quartet last even ing at the opera house was simply tine and fully lived up to expectation and then some. A crowded house greeted them and their work was quite unique and vastly pleased everyone, judging by the enthusiasm from start to finish. Cash Pritchard, who went to Omaha some ten days since, to enter the pharmacist department at Creighton college, returned home Monday evening, and we underttand will not return. Cash either graduated in a whirlwind football rush, or concluded the game was not worth the time and effort. Mr. and Mrs. a. B. Outhouse left Tuesday morning for Lincoln where Mr. Outhouse goes to attend the an nual session of the state lumber deal ers’ association, while Mrs. Outhouse goes to look after his conduct, and visit their daughter, Miss Winnie, and attend the banquet usual on such occasions. We have received word from the “Youth’s Companion” people that they have postponed the raise on that magazine till the last of March and that you can receive it at the Tate of $1.75 till that time. We are going to send in a club of readers, and if you want it, call and hand us your name and the $1 75 and we will do the rest. Hermion Temple. K. of P., Wednes day evening. Syas and Treasurer Henry, who, with his wife and baby, are here from Comstock, has decided to remain, and has purchased six lots near the Catholic church the purchase price being 1550, and will build thereon as soon as the conditions of the season will permit. He and his family will receive a cordial welcome from our people. Charles J. Larson, one of Loup City Nebr., energetic farmers and a friend of ye editor of 30 years standing, ar rived at Zephyrhills lastSunday even ing. Mr. Larson is on the list of re tired farmers and is oat for a good time, with the idea of seeing the south and probably Investing if he sees something that more than pleases him. Mr. Larson says when be left home there was 6 inches of snow on the ground and the mercury stood 8 below zero. CAPTURED' A WOLFE Mrs. Ida Lambsr. With ths Aid of tho Clergy, tho Happy Pones* aor of a Kansas Wolfs The many friends of Mrs. Ida Lam bert will be interested to learn that she, while looking after her claim in in Colorado the past few months found and pre-empted a much better claim in Kansas, being united in mar riage to Mr. C. D. Wolfe, a gentleman of Kansas, the wedding taking place at Norton, Kansas, the 11th of Dec. The happy pair arrived in Loup City Monday evening, Mrs. Wolfe coming up to close out her business affairs here and the latter part of this week leave for Carter, Kas., where Mr. Wolfe has traded some land for a mercantile business, and where they will make their future home. Mr. Wolfe has quite a lot of Kansas land and well off with this world’s goods, and is withal a very pleasant appear ing and genial gentleman. The Northwestern, with the hostof friends of the bride, will wish them untold happiness in their future life. Called to Father’s Deathbed Just in time to catch the morning’s B. & M. passenger, Banker Ira E. Williams received a telegram that his father, L. A. Williams, was lying at the point of death at his home at Glenwood. Iowa. A few days ago the old gentleman, who is in his 83rd year, suffered an attack of hemorrhage of the brain, paralysis following. He will be remembered by many of our citizens as visiting here about two years ago. The sympathy of our people go out to Mr. Williams in his affliction. Mid-Winter Bath While driving over his ice pond this morning, J. W. Conger drove the team on thin ice which gave way one horse falling in, dragging the other one in also and the wagon plunged foremost after, and it is reported Mr. Conger fell over the front into the icy pool. It took the boys some time and a deal of cutting away of ice before the team and wagon could be taken from their involuntary bath. Loup City, Nebr. Miss Henrietta Cbbgter is reported confined to tier home from injury re ceived by a fall. Mrs. John Chelewkki, living up the valley ten miles, died last evening about 5 o'clock. She was 82 years of age. J. I. Depew returned Monday even ing from attendance on the black smith’s convention held last week at Lyons, Kas. While there J. I., with a number of delegates to the con vention, visited the salt mines lo cated there and was lowered 1500 feet into the bowels of the earth and paraded around over some two miles of the underground surface in ex ploring the great wonder. He can tell some interesting tales of the visit. We received a pleasant call Tues day from Mr. John Jonassen, accom panied by his cousin, H. J. St. Louis from Wolkerville, Canada, jast across the river from Detroit, where he is at present bookkeeper for a big firm, and who on his return home will re sign his position and engage in the brokerage business at Cadillac, Mich. He is a very bright, intelligent gentle man, and an Interesting conveisa tionalist. He expects to return home the latter part of the week. T. M. Reed left Tuesday for his old home at Brooks, Indianna, where he goes for a season of rest and recrea tion from business duties. Mr. Reed is feeling in poor health and has for some time, and feels that he must have a rest from business for a time. If he gains in health, he will remain there until he is better, but if not will probably go to other points. His absence is not definite as to time. We trust he may return in best of health. He was accompanied by his brother, W. p. Reed who goes on two week’s business trip. Banker In E. Williams expects to leave the latter part of February with his family for their future home near Hood Biver, Oregon, 67 miles due east of Portland, on the Colum bia river, in the famous Hood Riyer valley apple country, he having pur chased seven and a half acres in young orchard three miles from Hood Biver, for which be paid the hand some price of 1,5600 per acre. His town property, and farm near Schaupps, traded some time since to his younger brother, Gilbert S. Williams of Glenwood, Iowa, for a fine farm near that city, will be oc cupied by the brother who will move here and into the home as soon as Mr. Williams vacates. Mr. Gilbert Williams is now building on the Schaupps farm, which he will rent or lease, while he moves into the Loup City home, and will later pur chase land adjoining this city to per sonally farm. Banker Williams is very enthusiastic over the Hood Biver country. ALLEGED HORSE THIEF ARRESTED Jesse Mitchell, a Young Man Well Known Here Arrested on Charge Horse Stealing HE SAYS HE IS GUILTY Last Sunday afternoon. Jesse Mit chell, a young fellow of about 25 years of age, and well known among our young people, haring been here for a number of monblis, was arrested by Deputy U. S. Marshal Ed Hayes of Omaha, for the alleged theft of a span of horses from an Indian in South Dakota, where his parents live, some two years ago, and who up to this time escaped the government on the above charge. At the time of his arrest, he was working for Joe Caddy south of town and had come to town to .take a hired girl out to the Caddy home to assist during the illness of Mrs. Caddy. The marshal, ac companied by Sheriff Williams and Frank Grow, for identification of the young man, had driven down to the Caddy home, and when arriving there found they had passed the young fellow on the road to town, and coming back, found him just ready to return with the desired help, and the arrest followed. We understand Mitchell confesses his guilt and will throw himself on the mercy of the court. Marshal Hayes left for Omaha Monday morning, and as the young man had escaped once or twice before the marshal took no chances with him, but gave him a pair of bracelets to wear, and after entering the car clapped on the leg irons. The rela tives of Mitchell here and in South Dakota are eminently respectable people, and the guilt of the young man will deeply hurt and mortify them, and our people will deeply re gret the unfortunate affair for there sakes.
