Sherman county had 2,981 children uf school age accounted for last year, which makes her get $2,994 of the ap portionment this year just made. The thermometer got busy here last weep and jumped above 9U sev eral days, on Friday humping iself to above. On the same day it was 98 in Omaha, just to go us 2 points bet ter. while Ft. Worth scored 102 and Knid. Ok!.. I«l. Six republicans have so far tiled for nomination for supreme judges. Let for re-eletion. J. F. Cobbey of Beat rice. J. F Mainer of Kearney and A. i F person of Clay being the latest aspirants, and the woods seem full | of 'em. For tlie alleged reason in complaint that the advertising of saloon peti i tions was not sufficient, lacking die full 14 da>s. at Lincoln, tiie author ities threw out all petitions and com pelled them to re-advertise the full time specified in the complaint, lienee the Lincoln papers reaped a second harvest of saloon legals. and the open ing of saloons delayed till .iune 19tli. Tiie printers were satisfied and the other fellows had to be. With a socialist speaker and a so cialist chairman in charge of tiie Dec oration Day exercises this year. Loup i ity was going same on tiie “red flag’’ >rder. don't you think? And when a speaker says lie would prefer sliak ing hands with the worst red-handed anarchist thau with a captain of in dustry on tiie monopolistic order, do you wonder at tiie pleased nods of ap proval from a certain element? Among the announcements this week will be found that of Herman J. Johansen, asking the republican nomination for SharifT. Herman is one of the best men in the county, thoroughly reliabie. painstaking and competent to till that most import ant office, and if nominated will, we believe, easily receive agoodlv major ity vote and attend to the duties of that trying place witii equal satis faction to all. lie lias been a citizen of Sherman county from boyhood up to the present and is know n and re spected by our entire people. We can cheerfully commend him as a fitting man for your support. He is the first to announce his name for the office ou either side. It is a sad commentary upon the in telligence of a community, or at least upon their taste for decency, when it I supports even w ith a precarious ex istence a so-called newspaper that has as its sole reason for existence the attempted downfall of those with whom it* ignorant projector is not in good graces. A publication which i lives for spite work and in endeavor ! to besmirch the fair name of citizens and like a turkey buzzard befouls with Its putrid breath the very best citizens of a community, some of wiiom represent the brain's and tinan ! cial interests thereof, is a tiling too despicable in it* entire make-up to be even named or noticed among decent people, and is extremely hurtful to the town and county where it spews , its venom, and while, though, it fails in its hellishness to ruin those upon whom it throws its slime, yet proves, like lice, bedbugs, (leas and other in | sects of its kind, a disagreable factor in a community and exasperating to all sense of decency. A community i h» never builded up by tearing down ;•** citizenship, and a publication that from week to week is engaged in such nefarious work is detriment al to the up-build of anv community in all respect*. I Dr. Marcy’s Mother The following was taken from the Sterling (Ills.) Evening Gazette of May 23. concerning the last sad rites to i>r. W. L. Marcy’s good mothor: The funeral of Mrs. Lucy Sands took place this afternoon at 1 o’clock at the home of her daughter and family. Mr. and Mrs. S.K. Green, on Sixth avenue. Dr. C. A. Riley, pastor of the First Congregational church of this city, conducted the services. His words were very impressive and a comfort to the ones left behind. Miss Ella Richards sang three beautiful songs, tlie last one being “My Soul be on Thy Guard.’’ This was sung upon renuest. This beautiful song, was learned by the deceased when a young girl, and it was one of her favorites. On her deathbed, just a little while before she passed to the other shore, her face illumined, and she burst forth in song, and sang this song. "Mv Soul be on Thy Guard,Ten Thousand Foes Arise.” They were fitting words to close the last sad service over the bier. The remains were taken to the Bur lington train, and at 3:25 were taken to Erie where they were consigned to the tomb with a short prayer by the pastor. The pall bearers were her four sons, Charles II. Marcy. Dr. William Marcy. Edward Marcy, Sum ner Marcy, and Roy Green and Roy Ikruglass, relatives of the woman. There were a great abundance of beautiful flowers, and the casket was literally covered with them. NEW BUILDING COMPLETED Palne-Fishburn Granite Com pany Building Completed (Urand Island Independent) With the conclusion of the new home on North Walnutstreet for the I’aine-Fisliburn Granite & Marble Works, Grand Island has added an other valuable improvement to the business section of the city, and one of which the “Third City” may well feel proud. Its location one block west of the Union Pacific depot, in the heart of the soutli side business district, with yardage of 132 feet square and pri vate spur track to its loading plat forms, added to the big building makes it beyond question the finest establishment in tiiis line of business in the state. In making this advancement it has well done its share in reaching out and enlarging the scope of its busi ness along with other industries not similar but all good. The firm, which was established here twenty-three years ago, has just moved into these handsome and cem modious quarters, but it will be some time before it gets everything in proper shape. This fine new building measures 66x110 feet. The frontage lies the long way on Walnut. It is two stories high, and has a basement under the construction department. The dis play room, which has not yet been gnished up, is 35x90 and the work room 27xSK). Both these rooms are supplied with mammoth traveling cranes which will permit of the raov. ing around of massive stones w ithout difficulty, and to any part of the building. These cranes will handle seveu and one-half tons at a load with ease. The machinery is located in the basement, as are the air tanks which provide pressure. The macliinerv used for sharpening toois. the heat ing plant and other etceteras are also there. The building has one of tbe finest fronts in the city. It is well con structed for an attractive display on the interior of goods for a view from the exterior. Arrangements for plat form room and yard space are perfect and every facility has been provided for the handling of granite. The second floor has been leased to Mrs. Mahar who will open in it a rooming house. All rooms are light, pleasant and airy, twenty-nine of them in all. The three office rooms and vault are located in the south end of the main street floor, and in their ap pointments will be in perfect keep ing with the other excellent arrange ments of the structure, and will be fitted out in the most approved manner in every detail. Tliis is said by the firm to be its busy season, and everybody around the plant has an air of activity. Yes terday three carloads of granite were received and shipped. The firm is to be congratulated upon is acquirement of this tine new home. It certainly has done its part in the upbuilding of the “Third City” The State Fair this year will be Sept. 4-«.
