President and Mrs. Taft, according to telegraphic dispatches, took a walk through the snow last Sunday afternoon. Will wonders never cease? It is claimed Alliance has had the proposed new state normal salted as its own from the time of its passage by the legislature—same as some un kind critics say of Kearney and her normal possession. But has it? The University of Copenhagen has decided that Dr. Cook did not reach the north pole and that he is a fraud of the first water. At this Peary grunts, “I told you so.” But then Peary has not proven he was there, either. Suppose Peary is another, what then? Demo-pop-fuso candidates for con gress are getting quite numerous already now, the latest to shy his castor into the arena being Judge Dean of Broken Bow. He is the fourth or fifth man who imagine they can tit their feet in our Moses’ con gressional shoes^^^^^^ The failure of the Shallenberger adminstratlon to properly manage the affairs of the state is evidenced by the condition that prevails at the Lincoln Hospital for the Insane, where the superintendent is writing to relatives of patients being cared for begging for money and clothing for their maintenance. Such a con dition establishes thoroughly either the incompetence of the management or the carelessness of the legislature, and the governor can take his choice. —Bee. The controversy in regard to the north pole will now take a back seat, while the smart savants will take up the discussion as to which is the shortest day of the year. According to a long article in the State Journal on Monday, Dec. 21 is a fake Cook and the 22d is the Peary and wins the prize as the shortest. This de duction is made from scientific obser vations and the 21st is now to be considered in the light the Copen hagen University has found Dr. Cook. The story then goes on to state that some time during the next century the exigencies of the earth’s revolu tions as to its relations with Old Sol, will cause Dec. 20th to be the short est day. Thus are our idols shattered and who knows but the Fourth of July will yet get in its work as the shortest day. Deadly Crossing Gets Two Victims Young Couple Badly In jured-Girl May Die Horses Killed. Reports reach us of a serious ac cident at a deadly railroad crossing just west of Hazard, last Saturday night, in which a young couple were run into by a freight train, and dragged for some distance, their horses killed, and resulting in serious and possibly fatal injury to the young woman while her companion was also badly, though not fatally hurt. The story as it comes to us is as fol lows: Troy Sheehan and Miss Hope Eastabrook, living five miles east of Litchfield, had been attending a dance at Hazard Christmas night, and while oa their way home about 1 o’clock in the morning, and driving over the railroad crossing where a deep cut precludes the sight of trains coming from either direction, a heavy freight bore down upon them, struck the outfit squarely, killing both horses and dragging the buggy and its oc cupants several rods before they were extricated from their perilous posi tion and cast to one side. The acci dent occurred only a few rods from the farm house of Robt. Frost, where Miss Eastabrook was taken, and she was found so badly cut about the head that a number of stitches had to be taken, and where she now lies in a precarious state. Sheehan, while hurt severely, was able to be taken to his home and latest reports are to the effect he is getting along all right. Austin Nows Christmas is over and everybody had a goo time so far as known. The Christmas, tree at the church was well filled and there was a large at tendance. Everyone received pres ents and the program by the chiilbren was well rendered and appreciated by all, both young and old, and all hope to see many more such gatherings. Willis Fullition and family had a reunion Chrisnmas day. Ten of his eleven children were there, also the grandchildren and other friends and relatives. Eighteen people sat down to Christmas dinner. Mr. Charles Johnson and family of York county, Mrs. Hester Heath of Norden, Neb., George and Marion Fulliton of York, Mrs. Viola Lewis of Boelus, Richard Brodock and wife, Mrs. Effa Cady and Mrs. Emma Haak were the cliil dren and guests. Sunday afternoon Prof. Boone of Loup City took a view of Willis Full!, ton’s residence and family. Reports received here Sunday last were to the effect that ex-Gov. .1. H. Mickey was on his death-bed at his home in Osceola. For a month past the governor has been very ill, grow ing worse day by day, till the report of Sunday which abandons hope of his recovery. His illness is from anaemia. A great blizzard swept the southern and New England states Christmas, even as far west as Des Moines heavy snow blocking all traffic. Phila delphia and New York City report the heaviest snow in years. At Bos ton, in addition to the snow came a great tidal wave that inundated the shores, waves twenty to thirty feet in height sweeping inland, causing many deaths and destroying hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of property.
