Beushausen of the Times, in his
endeavor to justify his action in his
unfairness to this paper, injects the
name of Attorney Starr into the dis
cussion. Our answer to this is very
plain. If Mr. Starr, or any other re
publican lawyer, prefers to place his
legals in the Democratic Times, rath
ers than in the Republican North
western, that is a matter entirely out
side the question at issue, but if Mr.
Beushausen uses his position as clerk
to secure Mr. Starr’s legal notices,
then is Beushausen in the same ques
tionable attitude. And what reason
have we to doubt it?
The Times endeavors to take the
disposition of legals out of the hands
of the lawyers, by its editor looking
up the clients, which knowledge he
gleans first hand by reason of his of
ficial position at the court house, and
asking, cajoiling, cutting rates or pos
sibly publishing same for little or
nothing, secures their consent to or
der their legal adviser to have said
legal notices published in the county
clerk’s newspaper, the Times. These
are facts and are a part of the “bill
of particulars” “fourth” coming. Do
you want any more11 fourth” coming?
There are more for the asking.
To ascertain the reason for Gibson’s
malevolent and without doubt action
able attack on the character of At
torney R. J. Nightingale last week
it is only necessary to state that Mr.
Nightingale assisted the county at
torney in the prosecution of the Gib
son case, wherein Gibson was. found
to be shy several hundreds of dollars
due the county, which, with interest
and costs, amounted to some $500 and
over. Mr. Nightingale now has the
pleasure of being up against the en
tire mud battery at present, but will
probably escape unscathed as the
guns generally explode at the breech,
spilling all over the gunner.
The Primary Farce.
Ex-Senator Frank Curry of Custer
county was In Loup City Tuesday
night on a short business visit, and
at the depot Wednesday morning gave
a Northwestern reporter a few mo
ments of his valuable time. He has
just finished building a rairoud and
smelter enterprise in Mexico and
is atl home again looking after
his extensive interests. Asked if he
was out of politics, he said “Yes, for
ever: since you people passed the rot
ten primary law; I am done.” We
hastened to protest our position is
and has been against this worst law
upon our statute books, and asserted
our belief that nine-tenths of the
newspapers of the state, outside of a
few of the dailies and larger weeklies,
were also against the law. “And
also nine-tenths of the voters,” pre
tested the senator. He also expressed
his conviction that the people would
sooner or later wipe the farce fjom
our statutes; that instead of better
ing matters and giving us beter offi
cials, it has the opposite tendency;
men of no standing can of their own
volition become party nominees, and
that the law gave undue power to
the dailies, larger weeklies, and po
litical centers, as against the rank
and file of voters over the state. Mr.
Curry believes the opposition to the
primary law only needs a leader to
crystalize its power and wipe out
said law. Senator Curry is one of
the brainiest, most brilliant, cleanest
and fairest men ever in the state’s
political arena, and we believe voices
the crying demand of the majority of
the voters of the the state. Will the
Lincoln Daily News take cognizance
of Senator Curry’s views, which are
practically the same as expressed by
the Northwestern two weeks since in
answer to the News writer's fling at
conventions and “red-nosed” leaders,
as the News put it, even if the News
is too big and high and powerful and
omnipotent, fn its own opinion, to
condescend to answer or reply to the
same ideas expressed by the North
western, one of its obscure country
contemporaries, seemingly on the hy
pothesis, perhaps, that “no good can
come out of Nazareth.”
Week before last we insisted Beush
liausen was Using his office as county
clerk to secure business for his news
paper. • This he practically admitted
in his paper last week but tries to
sneak out of it on the assertion that
clients have the right to designate to
their legal advisers what paper shall
print their notices. Very pretty, Mr.
Beushausen, but is it not a fact that
as soon as a suit is filed in your office,
you take immediate steps to see said
party and if possible get him to order
his lawyer to place the legal printing
of the same in your paper, at legal or
cut rates? The three legal notices
in question Would have come to the
Northwestern through Mr. Nightin
gale, had. not Beushausen deliberately
knocked on $\i\ business and used his
office as cpunty clerk to secure said
legals, and yet sometime since told us
he had not and would not seek to take
away business from us. How long
would Uncle Sam stand for one of his
Nasbys using tips of his office to sup
port his paper to the detriment of his
contemporaries? The main trouble
with Beushausen is that the almighty
dollar with him overshadows decency
in business relations to too great an
extent. Does Mr. Beushausen want
any further bill of particulars
•‘fourth”coming? If so, there are plen
ty, without exhausting the source.
About the meanest suspicion cast
upon us of late is the query as to
whether we are guilty of writing the
Times editorials. Since when have
we developed the aptitude of a tenth
grade schoolboy composition style of
expression? Oh, the idea is so cruel.
We demand a bill of particulars be
“fourth” coming, as the Time intel
ligently puts it.
The Times is using Gibson’s name
to prejudice voters from voting for
Weare for county clerk. Beush knows
Mr. Weare was not brought out by or
through Gibson influence, and is us
ing that bugaboo merely in attempt
to detract votes from the republican
candidate for county clerk. It may
be politics, but if so it is of a dishon
est breeding.
